The PIChE Sustainability Engineering Course is proud to announce that the UPLB Interdisciplinary Life Cycle Assessment Laboratory (UPLB-ILCAL) is officially joining the mentoring team!

UPLB-ILCAL stands as a premier hub of expertise in the country, representing institutional excellence in the field of Life Cycle Assessment. By anchoring the program with their specialized academic and research capacity, the incoming cohort will gain direct access to rigorous, data-verified frameworks needed to evaluate real-world industrial systems, calculate carbon footprints, and eliminate environmental bottlenecks without shifting the burden elsewhere.

Hear their special message and learn how they will shape the course during our upcoming virtual launch:

INVESTING IN FUTURE RESEARCHERS AND SUSTAINABILITY LEADERS

The UPLB Interdisciplinary Life Cycle Assessment Laboratory (ILCAL), together with the UPLB Interdisciplinary Biofuels Research Studies Center (IBRSC), is currently hosting six (6) midyear interns.

From June 8 to July 14, 2026, these students will be immersed in various research and sustainability initiatives that will allow them to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world challenges.

During the internship, the students will gain hands-on experience in:
🔹 Identifying funding opportunities and preparing technical and financial proposals
🔹 Conducting biodiesel production experiments
🔹 Process simulation using Aspen
🔹 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) projects
🔹 Institutional decarbonization roadmapping and data visualization using Power BI

To complement these activities, the interns will also participate in learning sessions led by ILCAL and IBRSC project leaders on topics such as:
📌 Social Aspects of Data Gathering by Asst. Prof. Pamela Joyce M. Eleazar
📌 Microplastics by Prof. Amelia B. Hizon-Fradejas
📌 Ecotoxicology by Prof. Janice B. Sevilla-Nastor
📌 Marginal Cost Abatement by Assoc. Prof. Maria Victoria Milo-Sumagang
📌 Economic and Financial Analysis by Prof. Nora DM. Carambas

We hope this internship will provide our interns with meaningful exposure to research, sustainability, and engineering practice while helping them develop the skills and experience that will support their future careers.

We look forward to learning and growing together over the next few weeks!

UPLB ILCAL in Siargao for Circular Economy Capacity Building! 🌊♻️

As part of DOST’s Project Green Wave, we facilitated a 2-day workshop on Embedding the 10Rs in Instruction, Research, and Extension for HEIs and DepEd STEM—strengthening sustainability integration across teaching, research, and extension initiatives.

The workshop covered key topics including the Circular Economy ISO 59000 series, valorization strategies for plastics and biomass, fundamental concepts in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and practical approaches to integrating Circular Economy (CE) principles into academic curricula.

UPLB ILCAL, together with its project team, successfully conducted the inception workshop for the project “Life Cycle Assessment of Potentially Non-Environmentally Acceptable Products in the Philippines,” funded by GIZ.

This study aims to generate robust, science-based evidence that will support informed government decision-making and strengthen policy directions toward more sustainable production and consumption in the Philippines.
