The UPLB Institute of Animal Science proudly congratulates Dr. Arnel N. del Barrio, Academician and IAS Adjunct Faculty member, on receiving the 2026 Outstanding Professional of the Year Award in Agriculture.

The award was conferred on 4 September 2026 by the Professional Regulation Commission, in collaboration with the Foundation for Outstanding Professionals, Inc. and in cooperation with the Philippine Association of the Professional Regulatory Board Members, Inc. This distinction recognizes Filipino professionals whose work reflects excellence, integrity, and meaningful service to their profession and communities.

Congratulations, Dr. del Barrio, on this well-deserved recognition.

The UPLB Institute of Animal Science welcomed CAFS freshmen and continuing students to the 2026 IAS Open House on 27 August at the Villegas Hall Lobby.

The IAS Open House is an annual activity that introduces students to the Institute’s academic programs, divisions, student organizations, and the IAS community. It provides new and continuing Aggies with an opportunity to connect with fellow students, meet the people behind IAS, and explore the Institute’s programs and opportunities.

Thank you to all the students who joined us. We hope you had fun, made new connections, learned more about IAS, and went home with full stomachs.👀

Our sincere appreciation also goes to the IAS divisions, participating student organizations (U.P. Animal Science Society, UP Concordia Scientia Animalis - UP CSA,and UP Society of Animal Nutrition Students ), and Arko Band for helping make the event engaging and memorable.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗮𝗯 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺: 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲

BS Agriculture and BS Agricultural Biotechnology students presented their internship experiences during the culminating activity for ANSC/ABT 198 on 13 August 2026 at Animal Science Lecture Hall 2.

Through poster presentations, the students shared the knowledge and skills they gained from various Host Training Establishments covering animal production, dairy, meat processing, biotechnology, and other allied fields.

The activity highlighted how internships connect classroom learning with professional practice while developing students’ technical skills, adaptability, and understanding of the animal science sector.

The Institute congratulates all student presenters, with special recognition to the Poster Competition winners. IAS also thanks the panel of judges, Ms. Clare Hazel R. Tabernilla of IWEP, and Ms. Katrina Aquino, Ms. Ailyne Cuevas, and Mr. Mark Jafet Henebraldo of IAS, for their time and constructive feedback.

The UPLB Institute of Animal Science proudly congratulates 𝑴𝒔. 𝑬𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂 𝑻𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒅𝒂𝒅 𝑫𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒆𝒍 on receiving the 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝑼𝑷 𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒎𝒏𝒊 𝑨𝒔𝒔𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒖𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒅 𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒎𝒏𝒊 𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝑬𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 during the UPAA Alumni Awards held on 15 August 2026 at Ang Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman.

An IAS alumna from the 𝑩𝑺 𝑨𝒈𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝟏𝟗𝟕𝟗 and an animal nutritionist by profession, Ms. De Manuel is the Executive Vice President of Universal Feed Mill Corporation (UNIFEEDS). Together with Dr. Avelino De Manuel,DVM, she helped pioneer the formula feed industry in the Visayas and grow an agrivet enterprise into a feed manufacturing company serving the poultry and livestock sectors.

Her contributions to value-adding enterprises, market access, responsible farming, and sound agribusiness practices have helped strengthen rural livelihoods and local economies.

Her journey demonstrates how expertise in animal science, guided by entrepreneurship and service, can create lasting impact in agriculture and rural communities.

𝗢𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 | 𝟭𝟲 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟵𝟱𝟮

Today, the UPLB Institute of Animal Science remembers the life and legacy of Samuel Bert Durham, the pioneering educator who laid the foundation for animal husbandry education in the Philippines.

When the UP College of Agriculture held its first classes on June 14, 1909, Durham had not yet begun his official duties. It was only on August 17, 1909 that he was formally appointed as Instructor in Animal Husbandry, marking the beginning of what would become a century strong academic discipline at the University.

Teaching under extremely modest conditions, Durham had no laboratory, no visual aids, and no teaching materials. But with grit and innovation, he used "borrowed animals" as his instructional tools. As stated in Department of Animal Husbandry by Villegas (1929), Philippine Agriculturist, Vol. 18, pp. 313-326, as cited in Hilario (1984), 75 Years of Animal Science, Philippine Agriculturist, Vol. 67:

Durham served as head of the Animal Husbandry Department until November 14, 1914, leaving the College after more than five years of service. In this formative period, he mentored the first generation of Filipino animal scientists, among them 𝘽𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙙𝙤 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙖 𝙂𝙤𝙣𝙯𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙯, who would later become UP President. Gonzalez was also the first graduate assistant in animal husbandry, working alongside student assistants 𝙇𝙪𝙙𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙤 𝙃𝙞𝙙𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤, 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙤 𝘽. 𝙍𝙖𝙮𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙤, 𝙁𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙤 𝙁. 𝘾𝙧𝙪𝙯, 𝘼𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙤 𝙄. 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙢𝙗𝙖𝙮, 𝘿𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤 𝙋𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙙𝙚, 𝘼𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙤 𝙇𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙣, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘼𝙡𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙤 𝘼𝙙𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙤. Many of these young men went on to hold significant positions and make lasting contributions to Philippine agriculture.

After returning to the United States, Durham continued to champion livestock development as Oklahoma's pasture specialist, helping transform worn out lands into productive fields and laying the foundation for dairy and pasture improvement programs.

By the time of his passing on August 16, 1952, Samuel B. Durham had empowered generations of farmers and students. His legacy lives on in the pastures of Oklahoma, in the streets of UPLB, and in the mission we continue at the Institute of Animal Science.
