About FMDS

The Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) is one of the three faculties of studies of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU). It was established in 2004 when the then Faculties of Health Sciences and of Management Studies, both established in 1995, were merged. As a collective of various disciplines spanning from the health to the environment to manage

ment and to the development fields, it deals with policy, program and development concerns related to environment and natural resources management, land valuation, research and development, nursing, international health, social work and public management. These thematic areas have become the teaching, research, extension and public service areas of the FMDS over time. The Values We Live By

In order to effectively translate the mandates of scholarship and service to the nation which are entrusted upon the Faculty, the FMDS adheres to the following mission and commitment statements:

The Brown Bag Session, "Cultivating Digital Transformation: A Collaborative Model for Philippine Higher Education," will take place on Friday, September 11, 2026. The online discussion aims to present initial research findings and proposed recommendations for strengthening open and distance e-learning in the country.

This event is presented by the Higher Education Research and Policy Reform Program of the University of the Philippines Center for Integrative and Development Studies together with the University of the Philippines Open University.

Join us for 𝑳𝒆𝒕'𝒔 𝑻𝒂𝒍𝒌 𝒊𝒕 𝑶𝒗𝒆𝒓 as we turn the conversation toward advancing ASEAN Studies in Southeast Asia and beyond.

In celebration of ASEAN Month, this special episode of the ASEAN Studies Lecture Series (ASLS), titled “Advancing ASEAN Studies in Southeast Asia and Beyond: Scholarship, Relevance, and Regional Contributions,” will explore the current state, emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities in ASEAN Studies scholarship, drawing from the experiences and insights of the UPOU ASEAN Studies Graduate Program.

Wherever Filipinos are, learning should be within reach

UPOU is strengthening its commitment to overseas Filipinos through potential academic collaborations with the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu.

The discussions explored lifelong learning opportunities for OFWs and Filipinos with dual citizenship, including possible programs in entrepreneurship, community building, and continuing education.
As UPOU expands its international partnerships, it continues to create pathways that bring accessible, quality education closer to Filipinos, wherever they may be in the world.

UPOU in the news: Education opens doors even behind prison walls

The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) continues its commitment to making education accessible to all learners through its partnership with the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor). In a Daily Tribune article by Alvin Murcia, 144 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) were recognized for completing courses under the Development Professional Growth Program.

The initiative provided learning opportunities in programming, permaculture, functional literacy, and entrepreneurship, equipping participants with valuable knowledge and skills for personal growth and future reintegration into society.
