: Hack4AProgress 2026 challenges participants to build AI solutions for local governance

The Department of Science and Technologyโ€“CALABARZON (DOST-CALABARZON), through its Management Information Unit (MIS), kicked off Hack4AProgress 2026 today, September 8, 2026, at Queen Margarette Hotel Downtown, Lucena City, Quezon, bringing together participants from across CALABARZON to develop technology-driven solutions to real-world challenges in local governance.

Carrying the theme, โ€œHarnessing AI to Build a Resilient and Sustainable Nation,โ€ the three-day activity aims to foster innovation and collaboration by challenging participants to develop practical, data-driven, and artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled solutions that can address pressing needs of local government units (LGUs).

Now on its third season, this yearโ€™s Hack4AProgress highlights the integration of AI in developing solutions for local governance, particularly its potential to improve public service delivery, data management, resource management, environmental monitoring, and decision-making. Participants are encouraged to explore how emerging technologies can be applied to create more efficient, resilient, and inclusive solutions responsive to the needs of communities.

For Jezreel R. Ramos of Laguna State Polytechnic Universityโ€“Sta. Cruz, a first-time Hack4AProgress participant representing Team EverForge, the experience of developing their project has allowed the team to see the hackathon as an opportunity to turn their ideas into solutions for community needs.

โ€œAt first, we joined to represent our school, but as we studied the topic and developed our project, our vision and mission became clearer. We realized that we're not doing this just to comply or represent the school, but also to find a way to solve problems in our community,โ€ Ramos shared.

A Technology Summit (Tech Summit) was also conducted on September 7, 2026 as a pre-event activity leading up to the official kickoff of Hack4AProgress. The Tech Summit served as a capacity-building platform featuring discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions designed to enhance participantsโ€™ technical competencies a\nd prepare them for the hackathon.

Hack4AProgress 2026 will run until September 10, 2026, culminating in a 48-hour hackathon where participants will pitch their prototypes to a panel of judges. Three teams will be selected as winners, with the winning teams to be announced on September 10. The three winning teams will receive their respective cash prizes during the Smart and Sustainable Communities Conference on October 13, 2026, as part of the 2026 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) celebration. The champion will also be given the opportunity to propose a project to DOST-CALABARZON with seed funding of PHP 1,000,000.00.

Stay tuned and follow DOST CALABARZON so you donโ€™t miss out any Hack4AProgress news and updates!

TANAY, Rizal โ€” To bridge the digital divide in off-grid communities, the Department of Science and Technology โ€“ Provincial Science and Technology Office in Rizal (DOST-PSTO-Rizal), in partnership with Salesforce Philippines Corporation, deployed two (2) solar-powered, STARBOOKS-ready computer units to Rawang Elementary School (RES) and its Sitio Macantog annex, September 3.

As a last-mile school in the province, RES caters to Indigenous Peoples Education (IPED) through its Macantog annex. The school was selected as the beneficiary for Salesforce Philippines' corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, marking its third sponsorship partnership with the DOST-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) for nationwide STARBOOKS deployments.

During the turnover, key stakeholders highlighted the power of public-private partnerships in advancing student learning through sustainable technology. DOST-Rizal Officer-in-Charge Engr. Mhark Ellgine A. Libao reaffirmed the agency's commitment to bringing science and technology interventions closer to remote learners, while expressing sincere gratitude to Salesforce Philippines for its steadfast support.

The event was graced by Tanay Municipal Councilor Hon. Rogelio Catolos, representing Mayor Hon. Rex Manuel C. Tanjuatco; Engr. Libao of DOST-Rizal; Public Schools District Supervisors Mr. Pitsberg B. De Rosas and Ms. Cecilia D. Ramirez, representing DepEd SDO Rizal Superintendent Dr. Doris DJ. Estalilla; and Mr. Abraham Cuevas, AVP and Country Manager of Salesforce Philippines Corporation.

To express their gratitude, learners from the Sitio Macantog annex performed a traditional dance showcasing the Dumagat-Remontado community's rich cultural heritage and deep connection to the Sierra Madre.

Through this deployment, DOST-Rizal and Salesforce Philippines reinforce their shared commitment to ensuring no learner is left behind, opening doors to digital literacy and quality educational resources even in the most remote communities of Rizal.

MSMEs in Sto. Tomas strengthen digital readiness through TIKME

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Sto. Tomas strengthened their digital readiness through a seminar on transforming MSMEs into smart enterprises held at SM City Sto. Tomas, Batangas, September 4.

The seminar was organized through the partnership of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Batangas, City Government of Sto. Tomas, Rotary Club of Batangas Malarayat, and SM City Sto. Tomas as part of Teknolohiya at Inobasyon, Kaagapay ng Micro Enterprises (TIKME), held from September 2 to 4.

Mr. John Maico M. Hernandez, Senior Science Research Specialist of DOST-Batangas, facilitated the discussion on digital transformation, emphasizing that it goes beyond simply digitizing existing business practices. He explained that digital transformation involves redesigning how a business creates value by bringing together technology, data, people, and new ways of working.

Mr. Hernandez identified four forces that continue to drive MSMEs toward digital change: customers, industry, rules, and shocks. He emphasized the need for enterprises to build digital capability into how they compete, respond to market changes, and sustain their operations.

The discussion also covered digital marketing for MSMEs, including principles of digital promotion and strategic communication, the Philippine social networking services market, approaches to developing digital marketing and promotion strategies, and an introduction to marketing and digital marketing promotion tools.

The session highlighted how digital technologies can support businesses beyond product promotion by helping enterprises communicate with customers, reach wider markets, understand changing consumer behavior, and make more informed business decisions. Integrating these tools into business processes can also help MSMEs respond to market disruptions and changing industry requirements.

In his message, Mr. Eric Dizon, Department Head of the City Livelihood and Enterprise Development Office of Sto. Tomas, emphasized the role of technology in advancing local MSMEs. He underscored the need for entrepreneurs to adapt to changes in the business environment and use available technologies to improve their operations, reach customers, and remain competitive.

Ms. Felina C. Malabanan, Provincial Director of DOST-Batangas, thanked the participating MSMEs and emphasized the importance of digital transformation in an increasingly technology-driven business environment. She stressed that digital transformation provides MSMEs with opportunities to improve their operations, expand market reach, strengthen customer engagement, and respond to emerging business challenges. She also emphasized that technology should be viewed not only as a tool for business promotion but as a means of continuous improvement and innovation.

The seminar was one of the activities of TIKME 2026, which brought together local MSMEs, government partners, and technical experts to promote the application of science, technology, and innovation in enterprise development.
