For PDLs, learning can open a way forward

The University of the Philippines (UP), through the UP Open University (UPOU), together with the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and the UP Alumni Association (UPAA), honored 119 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) who participated in the Workforce Development for PDLs Program.

Sixty-eight learners of the 119 participants completed courses in programming with scratch, permaculture, functional English literacy, and business concepts, ideation, and business plan development. During the culmination ceremony, learners received certificates and shared reflections on how education helped them gain new skills, discover their strengths, and see possibilities beyond their present circumstances.

The program reflects the continuing partnership of UP, UPOU, BuCor, and UPAA to expand access to lifelong learning and workforce development opportunities for PDLs.
