: DA-SERVE On-the-Job Training for Undergraduate Students

We are inviting interested and qualified students to apply to the on-the-job training program for 3 months at IRRI HQ, Philippines. The program is envisioned to help the students develop the skill-set related to their chosen area of specialization that would equip them when they eventually enter the workforce, enable them to finish their undergraduate thesis, and allow them to build networks as they begin their journey to the professional world.

Here’s a simple garden layout where you can easily practice relay planting and crop rotation:
1. Divide the garden into three sections.
2. Plant early maturing vegetables and vegetables you can harvest in 2-4 months in one section. (tomatoes, pechay, sweet corn, etc.)
3. In the second section, plant semi-annual vegetables or vegetables that will continue to be harvestable for 6-9 months. (winged bean, ampalaya, cucumber, ginger)
4. In the last section, plant year-round harvestable vegetables such as patani (lima beans), kangkong, alugbati, kadyos (pigeon pea), etc.
5. For all sections, reserve the remaining half-portion for relay planting.
6. After a year or so, rotate sections.

When you practice crop rotation, you make use of crops’ different root lengths to keep the soil loose and aerated. Crop rotation is also a pest and disease management strategy and prevents nutrient depletion in the soil.
