The Applied Spectroscopy Research Laboratory (ASRL) hosted a research presentation session during its regular research meeting on September 4, 2026, at the Institute of Physics (IoP). The session was initiated by IoP Applied Physics alumni and provided an opportunity to share their current research and engage in discussions with faculty, researchers, and students.

The session featured four presentations covering diverse areas of physics and its applications. Vincent Gene Otero, an Applied Physics alumnus and MS Physics graduate of National Taiwan Normal University, presented a study on the search for terrestrial relic neutrinos using a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. Keana Rylie Pasoquen, also an Applied Physics alumna and MS Physics graduate of National Taiwan Normal University, discussed the Breit–Wigner–Fano Raman characteristics of semi-metallic 1T-Ti₁.₀₃S₂.

Rovie De Ramos, a Science Research Specialist at DOST-PAGASA, presented a comparative assessment of dynamic bathtub and hydrodynamic simulations for predicting storm surge–driven coastal inundation. Meanwhile, Clarence Feliciano, an MS Medical Physics student at UP Manila, presented work on electron and photon specific absorbed fractions and radionuclide S-values for adult Filipino mesh-type reference computational phantoms.

Cefas Giovanni Viedor (Living and Soft Matter Laboratory), Ashlie Cabrera (Applied Spectroscopy Research Laboratory), and Paul Lloydson Alvarez (Faculty, Institute of Chemistry) successfully completed the One-Week Research Experience in Kobe. Held from July 26 to August 1, 2026, the summer school was organized by the Center for Life Photonic Innovation at Kobe University under the guidance of Prof. Keisuke Tominaga.

Throughout the intensive program, the participants gained hands-on experience in cutting-edge research, broadened their expertise in photonics and spectroscopy, and established valuable professional connections with international peers and leading mentor-scientists.

During the Midyear 2026 term, the Applied Spectroscopy Research Laboratory (ASRL) had the pleasure of hosting the internship of three BS Chemistry students from the Institute of Chemistry—Jericho Johann Ocampo, Marvin Mangubat, and Katherine Agnes Olivares—as well as Megan Regine Valdehueza, a PhD Applied Mathematics student from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences.

The BS Chemistry interns explored applications of fluorescence spectroscopy and UV–Vis–NIR spectroscopy, while Ms. Valdehueza conducted research on terahertz (THz) spectroscopy measurements integrated with machine learning and complementary simulations of the structure and dynamics of amorphous materials.

The interns were guided by the ASRL Research Assistants—Jericho Joseph Dida, Paulo Yvez Tolentino, and Micailah Francine Jariol.

Dr. Alvin Karlo G. Tapia delivered an oral presentation at the 11th Asian Congress of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology (ACTMP) entitled “Classification of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus using Terahertz Spectroscopy with Machine Learning,” in collaboration with Jean Edward Manlapas and Nacita Lantican of the Institute of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, UPLB. Jericho Joseph V. Dida, Research Assistant of the 7LAMPS Program, also presented a poster on the design and implementation of a portable fluorescence microscope with machine learning-based particle analysis.

Their participation was supported by the 7LAMPS Program, headed by Dr. Vachel Gay Paller.

The Applied Spectroscopy Research Laboratory members actively participated in Inoblasyon: The UP Innovation Summit 2026, held on May 5–6, 2026 at the SMX Convention Center Aura, Bonifacio Global City. Organized by the University of the Philippines, the summit brought together researchers, inventors, industry leaders, government agencies, and community partners to strengthen the country's innovation ecosystem and promote impactful, evidence-based solutions for national development.

On a separate event, the Institute of Physics, CAS, UPLB, highlighted its 2nd Institute of Physics Innovations Week, an initiative showcasing student projects, innovation talks, and industry engagement activities. The program featured discussions on commercialization, creativity and innovation, industry perspectives, innovation workshops, and opportunities for collaboration. Student presentations demonstrated how fundamental physics principles can be translated into practical devices and real-world applications.

Congratulations to Micailah Francine A. Jariol and Dr. Alfred P. Abella!

Their research, “Design of a Camera-Based Reflectance Measurement System with RGB LED Illumination,” was recognized at the 44th Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas (SPP) Physics Conference and Annual Meeting 2026, receiving the 3rd Best Poster award (Session B).

The research showcases innovative and accessible instrumentation for optical measurements and spectroscopy.

UPLB and UniEd will explore possible areas of collaboration, including the development of skills simulation laboratories and certification programs through UPLB laboratories such as the Nanotechnology Program.

Chancellor Jose V. Camacho, Jr. was joined by representatives from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Innovation and Enterprise Management, the Technology Transfer and Business Development Office, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Institute of Chemistry.

UniEd was represented by President Jose Maria Ochave, Strategic Partnerships and Business Development Manager Rene Ledesma, and other members of its delegation.
