𝗖𝗖𝗔 𝗷𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿

The third-year College of Communication Arts (CCA) students successfully concluded their seminar on Risk, Disaster, and Humanitarian Communication with the theme “Resilience in Action: Empowering Teams for Risk Reduction, Response, and Recovery” held at the Lipa City Convention Center (LCCC) yesterday.

The seminar aimed to enhance students’ knowledge and practical skills in disaster preparedness, emergency response, and humanitarian communication through a series of expert-led discussions and hands-on demonstrations.

Mr. Shanne Dhen Elnas delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of preparedness, collaboration, and effective communication in responding to emergencies and disasters.

“So this seminar is not just for us but also for you as well para mayroon tayong awareness once even though hindi [naman] natin pinagdadasal, once disaster or let's say unforeseen circumstances strike,” he stated.

The Philippine Red Cross – Batangas Chapter served as the first resource speakers, with Ms. Arlainne Marianne Vergara, EMT, and Ms. Marife Arnaiz, EMT. They provided an informative discussion on basic first aid, highlighting essential life-saving techniques and proper emergency response procedures.

Followed by a session from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) represented by FO1 Wally Ballesteros, FO1 Jhamil Dimaculangan, and FO1 John Renz Macondo, they discussed fire safety awareness and demonstrated firefighting techniques. A practical demonstration was also conducted at the CCA grounds, where some students actively participated in the activity.

The final talk was led by Mr. Joseph Dondon M. Mitra from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) who discussed disaster preparedness and response strategies, emphasizing the importance of awareness and proactive measures in minimizing risks during emergencies.

The seminar formally ended with closing remarks from the event director, Ms. Rhannielyn Sarmiento, who expressed appreciation to all speakers, organizers, and participants for their active involvement and cooperation throughout the event.

Overall, the seminar served as an eye-opening experience for the students, equipping them with practical knowledge and essential skills in handling real-life emergencies. It also reinforced the value of communication, teamwork, and preparedness in building resilient communities capable of responding effectively to disasters and humanitarian crises.

In the Philippines, survival now comes with a weekly price increase.

Another Tuesday, another adjustment. Fuel prices go up—again. Jeepney fares inch higher. Market prices quietly rise. Daily budgets shrink a little more each week. And still, people move. Because they have no choice.

The surge in fuel prices is largely driven by ongoing tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, Israel, and the United States—conflicts that threaten global oil supply. Instability in this region continues to push prices upward. A major concern is the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route that carries around 20% of the world’s oil supply—any disruption sends prices soaring. Brent crude has surged past $100 per barrel as attacks disrupt production facilities and supply infrastructure.

While the cause is global, the consequences are local. The Philippines imports around 90–98% of its oil, making it highly vulnerable to international price shocks. With little local production, every increase abroad quickly hits the pump. In recent weeks, local fuel prices have risen in consecutive weekly increases—most gasoline hikes averaging around ₱1.70–₱1.90 per liter and diesel similar, reflecting world oil market movements.

For drivers, the impact is immediate. Jeepney and bus operators spend more filling their tanks each day, yet passenger numbers often remain the same. Earnings stretch thinner, forcing longer working hours just to cover expenses. Commuters face similar struggles: an extra ride becomes a walk, a small comfort becomes unnecessary, and a fixed allowance no longer stretches far enough.

Fuel is not only for vehicles—it powers agriculture, manufacturing, and delivery systems. When fuel costs rise, so do the prices of food and basic goods. Families feel it in higher fares, more expensive groceries, and tighter daily budgets. Though the conflict happens abroad, its cost lands squarely on Filipino tables.

Temporary subsidies and relief programs offer momentary respite, but they do not remove the burden. Dependence on imported oil leaves the country exposed to future shocks. Investments in renewable energy, improved public transportation, and stronger energy security are not just environmental policies—they are economic safeguards for the Filipino people.

A war is fought far away—but its cost lands on our tables. At what point does endurance become injustice?
