Only on his 13th lesson here, Nate has already learned to shape and phrase melodic lines.

This Kawai upright has a somewhat heavy touch for young children, but with proper arm weight technique and by playing close to the keys, Nate can produce sound with remarkably little effort.

Nate’s parents drive him 12 km every Sunday just to attend his piano lesson. I want to commend that kind of dedication—not merely to his piano studies, but to the wider intellectual and artistic development that serious music study can help cultivate.

I think Marga has the most beautiful arch as a beginner. She naturally has a relaxed wrist and strong finger joints, which enable her to fully utilise arm weight: one of the fundamental techniques I teach in my studio from the very beginning.

Rather than relying mainly on isolated finger strength, we train students to use the natural weight of the arm, supported by a stable hand and strong finger joints, to produce sound with less unnecessary tension and greater control. For Marga, this coordination seems to come quite naturally, and it gives her a very good technical foundation to build on.

The most challenging part… HOW TO PLAY MUSICALLY.

07/08/2026

If we are going to have a music recital, I would rather invite musicians who are also actively practising another profession. I think they would be more inspiring to my students and their parents—most of whom are probably not aiming for a professional career in music—than someone whose full-time profession is music.

Why?

Our studio is not a pre-professional conservatory like Juilliard or Curtis. Most parents enrol their children not because they expect them to become concert pianists, but because they value what music does for their intellectual, emotional, and personal development. While some students may eventually pursue music professionally, that is not the usual goal.

A musician who is also a physician, engineer, scientist, lawyer, entrepreneur, or educator demonstrates something deeply encouraging: that a high level of musical excellence can coexist with another demanding profession. They can speak from experience about balancing serious practice with work, study, and other responsibilities. Those insights are directly relevant to the lives my students are likely to lead.

That doesn’t diminish the value of professional musicians. They have much to teach about the pursuit of musical mastery. But for the majority of my students, seeing someone who has successfully integrated music into a broader professional life sends a powerful message: you do not have to choose between music and another calling. You can strive for excellence in both.
