Dr. Rubiano’s memoirs—long hidden in the National Library of Spain and never before translated or cited in Filipino accounts of the Revolution—are made accessible in this English edition to scholars and the general public. As a rare eyewitness narrative, the book offers vivid and compelling insights into the fateful events in Lipa in 1898 and 1899, including the siege of the town, encounters between Filipino revolutionaries and Spanish troops, the treatment of Spanish prisoners of war, and the educational and cultural renaissance that unfolded in the locality. Centered in Southern Luzon, these memoirs illuminate Lipa’s pivotal role not only in the 1898 Philippine Revolution but also in the Philippine-American War, which continued in Batangas long after President Aguinaldo’s surrender—opening powerful windows into a people’s experiences on the eve of nationhood.

This recognition affirms the strength of collaborative scholarship and creative work, and the enduring importance of translation in bringing neglected historical voices into the present.

The De La Salle Lipa Center for Batangas Studies recently launched its first book publication in collaboration with the Center for Philippine Studies of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. The commissioned research paper turned into a book was an English translation of the original Spanish manuscript of Dr. Santos Rubiano Herrera, a Spanish military doctor assigned to Lipa, Batangas, during the last decade of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. The translation was done by Mr. Renz Marion Katigbak and DLSL Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Br. Manuel Pajarillo, FSC. The book narrates the 1898 account of Señor Rubiano about the cessation of Spanish military control in Lipa, Batangas, by the Filipino revolutionary forces. The prisoners of war were treated with dignity by the revolutionary forces, which makes the account more interesting to read.

The launch of the book, which was held on June 18, 2024, at Diokno Hall of De La Salle Lipa, was attended by DLSL and PUP school officials together with invited guests, Dr. Francis Navarro, Commissioner of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and Dr. Katrin Erika Buted, Department Head of the Batangas Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office. They delivered the key address for the launch. On the occasion, Mr. Howie Severino of GMA Networks presented his written lyrics that depict the historical siege of Lipa. The launch became possible through the Research Management and Coordination Office (RMCO) under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation. Copies of printed books are now available through the RMCO.

LOOK: The Center for Batangas Studies of De La Salle Lipa (DLSL), in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and the Center for Philippine Studies, will launch its first book, “Memoirs of a Prisoner of the Tagalogs” on June 18, 2024, 1:30PM, at the DLSL Café Le Barako.

The said book is a translation of Recuerdos de un Prisionero de los Tagalos by Santos Rubiano Herrera, rendered by Mr. Renz Marion D. Katigbak and Br. Manuel R. Pajarillo, FSC, PhD.

Dr. Rubiano’s memoirs have never been translated into another language and the narrative in Spanish has never been mentioned in any Filipino accounts of the Revolution. Working on these Recuerdos, which have been hidden away in the National Library of Spain for over a century, the present work in English presents to scholars and the public in general an insightful eyewitness of the fateful events in Lipa in 1898 and 1899. Dr. Santos Rubiano’s memoirs offer captivating details and insights on the 1898 Philippine Revolution in Southern Luzon, with Lipa serving as the primary setting of his account. His vivid narration encompasses the events leading up to and following the siege of Lipa, the clashes between Filipino revolutionaries and Spanish troops, the conduct of the revolutionary officers and Lipeños toward the Spanish prisoners of war, and the educational and cultural renaissance in Lipa.

These insightful historical accounts are windows to the soul of a people— accounts on the eve of nationhood, even more so, and in the case of Lipa, especially because it had a central role, not only in the Philippine Revolution begun in 1896, but also in the Philippine-American War that continued in Batangas province well after President Aguinaldo had surrendered.

The 2nd Consultative Meeting on Organizing the Batangas Historical Society (BHS) was held via Zoom on September 28, 2023, and was organized by the Culture and Arts Division of the Batangas Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office. Dr. Renato Maligaya, the coordinator of the De La Salle Lipa Center for Batangas Studies, represented DLSL. Multiple sectoral representatives from different local government entities, SUCs, and HEIs in the province participated in the aforementioned consultative online gathering. The purpose of the gathering is to formalize a provincial-wide organization that will serve as the hub for the collection, compilation, and consolidation of the province's historical documents, oral and folklore, and organic and cultural traditions. It will also perform cross-agency, multi-sectoral research and studies, complete documentation, and publication at the same time.

The De La Salle Lipa Center for Batangas Studies (DLSL-CBS), headed by its Coordinator, Dr. Renato Maligaya, together with the Chair of Social Science Area of the College of Education, Arts, and Sciences, Dr. Aristotle Balba, and faculty member Mr. Erwin Buenviaje, attended the inaugural lecture series "Amistad Duradera Lectures," organized by the Cavite Studies Center of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) in partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the Inter-Agency Committee of the Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day. The lecture series launched on September 27, 2023, at the Tanghalang Felipe of De La Salle University in Dasmariñas, Cavite, with a lecture on "Philippine Contribution to the Spanish Economic Systems of the 17th and 19th Centuries." The DLSL-CBS attended the event at the invitation of Dr. Jan Phillip Mallari, the Director of the Cavite Studies Center of DLSU-D. The plenary address of the Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines, Amb. Miguel Utray Delgado, and the conference overview given by NHCP Chairman Dr. Emmanuel Calairo were the highlights of the event. The director of the Instituto de Cervantes, Dr. Javier Galvan Guijo, is Delgado's representative.
