Fourth-year Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) Mathematics students presented their research at the First International Research Conference on Interdisciplinary Perspectives (IRCIP) 2024 organized by The Wise Researcher (TWR) Publishing, held virtually via Zoom on September 27-28. Themed โBridging Disciplines for Holistic Societal Development,โ the conference featured 135 presenters from 92 institutions and included 39 non-presenting participants.
The research presentations were organized into four thematic clusters: ๐๐ญ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ 1: Education, Language, and Psychology; ๐๐ญ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ 2: Economics, Business, and Management; ๐๐ญ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ 3: Engineering, Science and Technology, Information Technology; and ๐๐ญ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ 4: Philosophy, Religion, History, Humanities, and Social Sciences. BSED Math students of the college joined cluster 1 of the said conference.
The first research team consisting of Randhyl Keith R. Aguilar, Michelle A. Ametin, and Angel Lyn B. Cornel, along with their adviser, Prof. Edward B. Pescuela, has presented their study titled "Enriching Pre-Service Teachers Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) in Calculus Through Mathematical Technologies" The initiative, known as Project ENCALTECH, according to them, aims to enhance the TPACK of pre-service mathematics teachers. By focusing on the integration of emerging technologies in math education, the project seeks to hone their skills and capabilities, ultimately improving their effectiveness as future educators.
Meanwhile, the second research team led by Baby Criss A. Ponce, Dyna Mae L. Rojo, and Prof. Edward B. Pescuela has presented their study titled โMastering Mathematical Terminologies and Jargons Through Various Instructional Resources.โ The research, conducted at Kinale Elementary School in Polangui, Albay, focused on helping Grade 6 students understand mathematical language skills in a more accessible and engaging way through different instructional materials.
The third research team, including Mark Lester Bragais, Ninmark A. Aguilar, and Michael V. Vio, Jr., together with Prof. John Thomas Satimbre, also presented their study titled โBrigada Pagbilang: An Afterschool Remedial Program in Enhancing Mathematics 7 Competencies.โ The group developed innovative Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials tailored to the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs). These resources are available in both printed and non-printed formats, aiming to improve educational outreach and cater to various learning environments, thus fostering better comprehension and engagement among students.
Mark Lester Bragais, reflecting on his team's preparation for their undergraduate thesis presentation, stated, โLast month, I started browsing for a research conference where we could present our thesis. After finding one, we met with our team and discussed our plans with our adviser. Once we spoke with him, we completed the registration form, and within a few days, we received a notice of acceptance. In terms of preparations, we didnโt do much; we recycled the PowerPoint presentation from our final defense and created a 10-minute video presentation as required. We also reviewed the research paper briefly to prepare for the Q&A session during the conference.โ
โWe wanted our study to be acknowledged by those who could help us improve it. Iโve always aimed to contribute to the betterment of mathematics education, and this conference was a step toward that goal,โ Dyna Rojo expressed.
Despite falling short of securing an award at the conference, the three teams expressed gratitude for the opportunity to showcase their hard-earned theses.
