On this day in 1791, the brilliant English physicist and chemist Michael Faraday was born. Widely regarded as one of the most influential scientists in history, Faraday transformed our understanding of electromagnetism!
Michael Faraday came from a humble background with little formal education. At 14, he became an apprentice to a bookbinder, where he developed a passion for learning by reading scientific books. In 1812, he attended lectures by famed chemist Humphry Davy, which inspired him to pursue a career in science. Although his first request to assist Davy was rejected, he eventually became Davy's chemical assistant in 1813.
Faraday's career took off when he traveled across Europe with Davy, meeting renowned scientists. In 1821, he made a breakthrough in electromagnetic rotation, laying the foundation for electric motors. His most significant discovery came in 1831 when he uncovered electromagnetic induction, a principle critical to electric transformers and generators.
Faradayโs passion for science extended to public education, where he led the Royal Institutionโs Christmas Lectures. His contributions didnโt stop with researchโhe also served as a scientific advisor and professor. Despite health issues later in life, Faradayโs work revolutionized our understanding of electricity. He passed away on August 25, 1867, but his name lives on in the 'farad,' a unit of electrical capacitance, honoring his remarkable legacy.
