Did you know that "I" is officially one of the shortest words in the English language (tied only with "a")—and it didn't even start out as a single letter?

Back in Old English, it was written as "ic" (pronounced like itch). Over hundreds of years, people got lazy and dropped the "c," leaving just "i."

Because a tiny lowercase "i" was hard to spot in medieval handwriting, scribes started making it bigger so it wouldn't get lost on the page. That one simple design choice is the only reason we capitalize "I" today. Making it the shortest, most noticeable word in our vocabulary! 📜✨

Did you know that the word "clue" was originally spelled "clew," which just meant a ball of thread? 🧶

The meaning changed because of the famous Greek myth of Theseus. When Theseus went into a giant maze to face the Minotaur, Princess Ariadne gave him a ball of thread (a clew) so he wouldn't get lost. He tied one end to the door, unwound it as he walked deeper into the maze, defeated the monster, and then followed that simple string of thread all the way back out to safety.

Because of Ariadne's clever trick, people started using the word "clew" to describe any hint, guide, or piece of evidence that helps solve a tricky mystery!

Theseus didn't change the spelling himself, as that shift happened naturally over time as English evolved into what it is today.
