As classes begin today in most public and private schools, here’s a gentle reminder:
Today may feel like an ordinary school day for many. But for a child with special needs, this day could be life-changing.
Just imagine how big this step is for them.
Some may struggle to say hello to their classmates or to sit still in a new room. Some might cry or have meltdowns not because they’re “misbehaving,” but because they’re overwhelmed by loud sounds, bright lights, unfamiliar faces, or changes in routine. Others may seem quiet or distant, move in repetitive ways, or find it difficult to follow the lesson not because they don’t want to learn, but because they need a little more time, a little more help.
Still, they showed up.
And behind them are parents, therapists, and teachers who have poured their hearts into helping these children take this brave leap forward.
So if you are a teacher, a classmate, a parent, a school guard, a canteen staff, an office personnel or anyone who will cross paths with a child with special needs today, please, choose kindness.
Look beyond the behavior. Listen beyond the silence. That meltdown? It’s not defiance. That stare or lack of words? It’s not apathy. It’s a child trying to say: “I’m doing my best. Please see me, help me, understand me.”
Don’t meet them with frowns, side-eyes, or judgment.
Please don’t say they “don’t belong” (“dapat sa bahay na lang sila”) or that they’re “a disruption” (“manggugulo lang sila sa klase”).
They belong here. They deserve to learn, grow, and be accepted, just like every child.
Kindness costs nothing, but it changes everything.
As adults, we shape how children see and treat one another. Let’s teach compassion early. Let’s raise kids who make space for others. Let them sit beside the classmate who learns differently. Let them ask questions, be curious, and be kind.
Let’s not just raise high achievers. Let’s raise good human beings. Because learning alongside children with special needs teaches lessons no textbook ever will: patience, empathy, and the beauty of being different.
