Singers Who Don't Have Time to Exercise Their Voice, This Lesson Is for You..!

Creating time for vocal exercises—or even practicing songs—can be quite challenging for many singers, especially those with busy schedules. If you fall into this category, here's a simple way to keep your voice active even when life gets hectic: intentional humming.

Everyone hums at some point. You can hum while walking, doing household chores, commuting, driving, or even working (depending on the nature of your job). But did you know that humming is also a highly effective vocal exercise with several benefits for the voice?

Humming is classified as an SOVT (Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract) exercise. These exercises help the vocal folds work more efficiently by creating balanced air pressure within the vocal tract, making phonation easier and more coordinated.

You can hum notes, scales, simple melodies, or even songs while going about your daily activities. However, what separates vocal exercise from casual humming is intentionality.

In other words, don't just hum randomly throughout the day. Set aside brief moments to hum with purpose and focus.

For example, humming intentionally for just 3–4 minutes every couple of hours can easily add up to 30 minutes or more of vocal exercise over the course of a day. When repeated consistently throughout the week, those minutes accumulate into several hours of vocal training—without requiring a large block of practice time.

Even if you only manage 10 minutes of humming per day, whether divided into smaller sessions or done whenever you can, it is still far better than doing nothing at all.

Consistent humming can help improve:

👉🏽Resonance

👉🏽Vocal stamina

👉🏽Vocal coordination

👉🏽Ease of phonation

👉🏽Vocal warm-up and maintenance

While humming should not completely replace dedicated vocal practice, it is an excellent tool for keeping the voice active and conditioned when time is limited.

So, if your schedule makes it difficult to commit to long practice sessions, intentional humming may be one of the simplest and most effective ways to maintain your voice.

I hope this helps those who fall into this category.
