The continuing ashfall from Mayon Volcano poses significant health hazards to our community. Volcanic ash contains fine particles that can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Prolonged exposure may lead to respiratory issues, especially for individuals with asthma, allergies, or other pre-existing conditions. In addition, ashfall can reduce air quality, cause skin irritation, and increase risks of infection when inhaled.
To safeguard the health and well-being of everyone on campus, all faculty members, personnel, and students are strongly encouraged to wear face masks at all times while outdoors or in spaces exposed to ashfall.
Specifically, the following are recommended: (a) Wear appropriate masks. N95, KN95, or surgical masks are most effective in filtering fine ash particles. Cloth masks may be used if no alternatives are available, but double-layering is advised. (b) Limit outdoor exposure. Stay indoors whenever possible, especially during periods of heavy ashfall. (c) Wash hands and face thoroughly after being outdoors. Avoid rubbing eyes to prevent irritation. (d) Individuals with respiratory conditions should take extra precautions and consult health services if symptoms worsen. (e) Used masks should be discarded properly to prevent contamination.
Campus health services are available for consultation should anyone experience difficulty breathing, eye irritation, or other ashfall-related symptoms. In addition to wearing face masks and limiting outdoor exposure, it is essential that everyone remain updated on the evolving ashfall situation. All faculty, personnel, and students are strongly advised to regularly monitor advisories issued by authorized agencies such as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the Department of Health (DOH), and local government units.
Everyone's cooperation is vital in ensuring the safety of our academic community. By wearing face masks and following these precautions, we can collectively reduce health risks and maintain a safe learning environment despite the challenges posed by Mayon Volcano's activity.
Remain vigilant, responsible, and supportive of one another during this time.
