# ALMADIN RULES MCC 1800 & BELOW CHESS TOURNEY VIA TIEBREAK

**SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD Jan Yuniko Almadin proved that patience and fighting spirit can make the difference as the 26th seed emerged as champion via tiebreak in the 3rd Leg of the MCC FIDE-rated 1800 & Below Standard Chess Tournament held at Starmall EDSA-Shaw in Mandaluyong City.**

Carrying a FIDE Standard rating of 1602, Almadin battled his way through seven rounds before holding fellow junior player **Marcus Gavrie Florentino** to a draw in the crucial final round. The result gave Almadin a solid **six-point total from five wins and two draws**.

His final-round draw also created a tie with 8th seed **Chester Acuyong**, who likewise finished with six points. Almadin, however, prevailed on the tiebreak system and walked away with the **P7,000 champion’s prize, champion trophy, Milo gold medal and Milo gift pack**.

The two-day tournament was organized by the **Metropolitan Chess Center (MCC)** and supported by **Milo, the country’s No. 1 energy drink**.

Acuyong settled for **runner-up honors**, pocketing **P4,000**, together with a silver medal and Milo gift pack.

# # # FIVE-POINT-FIVE-POINT BATTLE

A tight battle for the next places saw **AIM Mark Vincent Nuella, Ferdinand Palermo, Esmael Abas, Marcus Gavrie Florentino and Robi Ocampo** finish tied with **5.5 points apiece**.

Nuella claimed third place and received **P2,500**, while Palermo and Abas took home **P1,500 each**. Florentino and Ocampo received **P1,200 each**.

All five players were likewise awarded their respective medals and Milo gift packs for their impressive performances.

Rounding out the **Top 10** were **AIM Tito Lorenzo Sean Balibalos** in 8th place, **AFM Steve Nitafan** in 9th and **AIM Edwin Caballero** in 10th. Each received **P1,200**, plus a Milo bronze medal and Milo gift pack.

NINE-YEAR-OLD ORIVIDA STUNS IM TURQUEZA, CAPS MILO CHECKMATE BATCH 6

Nine-year-old Javin Alexavier Orivida produced the biggest breakthrough of the day, defeating International Master (IM) Mari Joseph Turqueza in a thrilling 35-move battle as the Milo Checkmate Chess Clinics Batch 6 series came to a fitting conclusion over the weekend at the Starmall EDSA-Shaw in Mandaluyong.

Playing with the Black pieces, IM Turqueza faced 22 young chess enthusiasts in a simultaneous exhibition and scored an impressive 21 wins against just one loss.

The lone player to break through was young Orivida, who outplayed the International Master in a King’s Pawn Fianchetto Opening and secured victory after 35 moves.

For his remarkable achievement, Orivida was awarded a gold medal, making his upset win one of the highlights of the day.

The exciting simul served as the centerpiece of the one-day final evaluation that concluded the sixth batch of the year-round Milo Checkmate Chess Clinics, a program organized by the Metropolitan Chess Center (MCC) and supported by Milo, the No. 1 energy drink in the country.

Following the simultaneous exhibition, the young players had the opportunity to review and discuss their games with IM Ricardo de Guzman and FIDE Master (FM) Edgardo Garma, who provided valuable analysis, insights and lessons from their encounters with the master.

ORIVIDA COMPLETES A GOLDEN DAY

Orivida made his memorable day even more special by topping the Intermediate 2 competition with a perfect five points from five rounds, completing a double victory in the final evaluation.
Yushua de Leon finished second, while Dwayne Tyrone Torres, Francesco Chua and Mikhail Gavril Chua shared third to fifth places.

In the Intermediate 1 section, Miguel Magsino emerged champion with a perfect 3/3 score. Markus Elises placed second with two wins and one loss, followed by Austin Trey Riguera in third and Alonzo Posadas in fourth.

The Beginners 2 sections also produced exciting battles.

Registration for the 3rd leg of MCC Fide-rated Standard 1799 below Chess Tournament is now in full swing. The event will reel off On August 15-16 at the Starmall Edsa Shaw in Mandaluyong.

Deadline is set on August 12. Unrated entries are limited and will be accepted until August 10 on a first come first served basis.

MILO CHECKMATE BATCH 5 ENDS ON A HIGH NOTE; BATCH 6 OPENS THIS WEEKEND AS MCC LAUNCHES REGISTRATION FOR 3RD LEG FIDE-RATED TOURNAMENT

The Batch 5 series of the Milo Checkmate Chess Clinics concluded in spectacular fashion over the weekend at Starmall EDSA Shaw, Mandaluyong, highlighted by thrilling simultaneous exhibitions from two of the country's finest chess masters—International Master (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia and IM Ricky de Guzman.

Fresh from capturing the 2026 Philippine Battle of the Grandmasters title and earning the top spot on the Philippine team for the 2026 World Chess Olympiad, IM Garcia displayed world-class form by sweeping all 25 of his simultaneous matches.

Former Asian Junior Champion IM Ricky de Guzman likewise showcased his mastery, winning 20 games while yielding only five losses. The young players who earned the distinction of defeating the veteran master were Dwayne Torres, Miguel Magsino, Terra Brielle Abad, Rocco Osi, and Tyralexia Gallo.

The learning experience continued after the simul as IM Mari Joseph Turqueza conducted game analysis sessions, allowing the participants to review their games, understand their mistakes, and strengthen their decision-making skills.

To cap off the evaluation day, the enrollees competed in rapid tournaments according to their respective playing levels.

Rising chess stars are in for an unforgettable experience as International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia headlines the final evaluation of the Milo Checkmate Batch 5 Chess Clinics with a special simultaneous exhibition on Sunday, July 19, at 10:15 a.m. at the 3rd Floor, Starmall EDSA Shaw, Mandaluyong City.

One of the country's brightest chess masters, the 31-year-old Garcia recently emerged as the top qualifier for the Philippine men's team to the 2026 FIDE World Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan after capturing the Philippine National Chess Championship – Battle for the Grandmasters.

Milo Checkmate Batch 5 Weekend Chess Clinics Set to Begin

The much-awaited Batch 5 weekend series of the Milo Checkmate Chess Clinics kicks off this weekend, with the Saturdays-only classes starting on June 20 and the Sundays-only sessions commencing on June 21.

The Saturday classes will be held in Quezon City and Mandaluyong, while the Sunday sessions will take place in Parañaque and Las Piñas, providing young chess enthusiasts with another opportunity to sharpen their skills and elevate their game.

Open to children aged five years old and above, the program is designed to nurture chess talents and guide them toward master-level strength through a formal, systematic, and proven method of instruction. Courses are available for beginners, intermediate, and advanced players, with enrollees undergoing evaluation to determine their appropriate level.

Young Chessers Shine as IM Barlo Nadera Concludes Exciting Milo Checkmate Batch 4 Finale

The future of Philippine chess was on full display as the young talents of the Milo Checkmate Chess Program rose to the challenge against former Olympiad campaigner, International Master Barlo Nadera, during the grand culmination of Batch 4 held over the weekend at the 3rd Floor of Starmall EDSA Shaw in Mandaluyong City.

Fresh from scoring 26 victories against only seven losses in the opening round of his simultaneous exhibition, IM Nadera faced even tougher resistance in the second round as the Milo Checkmate enrollees showcased their improving skills and fighting spirit. The seasoned master finished with 18 wins and 15 losses, highlighting the remarkable progress of the young participants.

Leading the list of players who achieved the rare feat of scoring double victories against the master were Alexavier Javin Orivida, Dwayne Tyrone Torres, Miguel Magsino, Kennon dela Cruz, Luis Arkin Quiñones, Daniella Tamayo, and Gavin Pierre Anievas.

Also emerging victorious were Yushua de Leon, Alonzo Posadas, Austin Trey Riguera, Nathaniel Tamayo, Yael Antonio Ramirez, Marley Eunice Monsayac, Zachary Xavier Cunanan, and Rancho Ramirez.

Following the exciting simul, the participants received valuable post-game analysis from International Masters Ricardo de Guzman and Mari Joseph Turqueza, giving the youngsters a rare opportunity to learn directly from accomplished masters.

The day’s festivities continued with exciting blitz fun games that added more excitement and camaraderie among the participants.

Eight-year-old Alexavier Javin Orivida delivered a stellar performance to capture the Intermediate 2 crown with a perfect score of three points after three rounds. Richande Ezekiel Arcenal finished second with 1.5 points, while Dwayne Tyrone Torres and Yushua de Leon placed third and fourth, respectively.

In the Intermediate 1 division, Miguel Magsino emerged victorious after defeating Alonzo Posadas in their best-of-three championship showdown.

The Beginners divisions also produced outstanding performances:

All winners proudly received their respective medals. Gold medals were awarded to simul victors and division champions, silver medals to players who drew against the master and to second-place finishers, while bronze medals were awarded to third- to sixth-place placers.

Organized by the Metropolitan Chess Center (MCC) and supported by Milo, the event successfully concluded the fourth batch of the Milo Checkmate Chess Program. Beyond the medals and trophies, the participants gained invaluable experience, confidence, and inspiration as they continue their journey toward chess excellence.

The program's weekend classes resume this June, with Saturday sessions beginning on June 6 in Quezon City (9:00–11:15 a.m.) and Mandaluyong (2:00–4:15 p.m.), while Sunday classes will start on June 7 in Parañaque and Las Piñas.
