A sleep association is any behavior that helps you fall asleep. For adults, it could be a pillow that you cannot sleep without or a bedtime routine that you must do before dozing off. It is the same with babies. They connect certain things or activities to sleep and can be dependent on those sleep associations to fall asleep.

A baby that falls asleep relying on parents to perform sleep associations by rocking, reinserting a pacifier, or feeding to sleep will be dependent on these sleep associations to be back to sleep the same way if they wake up in the middle of the night or in between sleep cycles.

Independent sleep learning can help break these unsustainable sleep associations by replacing them with positive sleep associations that can optimize baby's sleep.

The baby's room should be very dark, especially during naps. Studies have shown that even the slightest amount of light can suppress melatonin, the hormone that helps us get to sleep and stay asleep. A dark room will support this hormone, which in turn helps them fall and stay asleep.

Wake time is the amount of time your baby spends awake between sleep times. Knowing this is important in improving your baby's sleep.

If the baby is up for too long, he/she may fight sleep. The same goes if the baby is not awake for long enough. Getting the timing "just right" is crucial as it can greatly improve overall sleep.

Knowing the age-appropriate wake time for your baby is critical. Sometimes, adjusting the schedule is just what it takes to solve your child's sleep troubles.

Alone, on his Back, and in his Crib. This is to prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)

Letting our child nap for long periods is the most common misconception about naps. The later the child wakes up from a nap, the later their bedtime will be.
