SDLC HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Founded on June 8, 1988, SDLC came to be as a preparatory school. As a start, it enrolled 52 little kids. The school was housed in one room apartment at 253 R. dela Serna St., Lapu – Lapu City. There were 2 teachers; 1 school nurse; 1 artist and 1 teacher aide. After a year of existence the number of students increased to 90. So, 1 additional room and 2 additional teac
hers were provided. Parents were very happy with the way SDLC teachers and staff taught and cared for their children. The school was able to produce pre-school graduates, who after a year or 2 of stay in Saint Dominic Learning Center, became readers and English communicators. That was how the school was known by the community of Lapu – Lapu – that utmost attention and care which were given to the students. So, the demand to open and elementary level came up. It was after 3 years as a preparatory school that SDLC opened an elementary department. In 1991 SDLC moved to Lower Matumbo, Pusok, Lapu – Lapu City where it rented an are of 1,800 square meters, floor area school building. Grade one to grade five levels were opened respectively. Two hundred elementary pupils enrolled. Seventeen teachers were employed to respond to the needs of the students. Grade six level was opened the following school year 1992-1993. There were eight graduates in grade six for School Year 1992-1993. Two Years after, in 1993, the High School department was opened. First Year Level was offered in 2 sections with 25 students per class. Then succeeding levels were opened once for every incoming year. Year 1994 was the time when the school was able to buy its own lot at Sangi, New Road, Lapu – Lapu City. During this year the 2 semi – concrete buildings were built for the High School Department. School Year 1994-1995 was a hectic year for administrators. The 2 campuses needed closer supervision, thus, the school heads had to travel frequently between the two schools. To make the school effective by giving its students the needed facilities, a 3 year construction period was launched – in years 1994-1996. Last June 1996, Saint Dominic de Savio Learning Center, finally found its home at Sangi, New Road, Lapu – Lapu City. Two 3-storey buildings were built fronting each other. A visiting priest from Bohol, even described our school campuses as “a little university” for its towering structures. March 1997, a moment of exultation. The school produced 62 fourth year high school students as its pioneering graduates. As the first batch, high expectations are being regarded to these young graduates for they are the first born – products of the institution. The school hopes that the Almighty God, who has been helping it along to reach its goals and ideals, in a tremendous growth within 9 years of existence, continually support the administrators and teachers to produce more graduates whose success in achievements shall glorify him. Through the years, Saint Dominic Savio School of Lapu – Lapu City has excelled in satisfying the needs of childrens in terms of education. It was in the year 2007, wherein Saint Dominic opens its new extension in San Miguel, Cordova, Cebu. As a start, it enrolled 90 students from the Pre – School up to the High School Department. Present to attend their needs were 6 teachers including the Directress, 2 Office personnel, 1 Maintenance and 1 School Guard. It was in this year when, proud and jubilant, the School produced 1 Pre-School Graduate, 4 Elementary graduates, and first 33 High-School Scholars. Soon, these 6 teachers increased to 8 and another building was built because of the growing number of students which for that year reached to 185. For the School Year 2008-2009, the School had its first 2 High School Graduates. The School was recognized in the year 2010. In the year 2011, the enrollment percentage has reached to 338 from 303 which mean an increase of 10.36%. Apparently, additional teachers were hired to meet the demands of the growing number of students. At present there are already 7 High School teachers and 7 Elementary & Pre-School, respectively. SDLC Cordova Branch is still looking forward for a fruitful number of school attendees for the coming years and in the process of improving school facilities to cater the needs of the students in terms of their laboratory and academic activities for their total Human development.
