Rather than holding separate school-wide events, Babag National High Schoolโ€“Senior High School is conducting this year's Nutrition Month activities through subject integration, allowing students to participate in the celebration without affecting regular class schedules.

The first integrated activity was a poster-making activity conducted in Disciplines and Ideas in the Applied Social Sciences (DIASS) and facilitated by Ma'am May Pearl Nunal. Through the activity, students promoted nutrition awareness while fulfilling subject requirements.

The school's Nutrition Month celebration will continue in the coming weeks, with Bartending and Cookery students set to lead the next batch of activities.

The person you dream to be is already waiting ahead.
But before you reach her, you must first fall behind and shed
everything that no longer fits.

Old voices will beg you to stay,
but you must turn, and walk away.
Break the shell that kept you small,
tear down the walls, and release it all.

Growth is pain in a quiet war.
To find yourself, you must destroy before.

And when the dust finally clears,
youโ€™ll meet the you thatโ€™s always been nearโ€”
not born from ease or gentle art,
but from the ruin of your heart.

Alexandra Eala's historic Wimbledon 2026 campaign came to an end on Sunday, July 6, at the All England Club in London after the 21-year-old Filipina fell to Italyโ€™s Jasmine Paolini, 6โ€“4, 4โ€“6, 6โ€“3, in a hard-fought fourth-round match.

Eala entered the fourth round with strong momentum after stunning defending Wimbledon champion Iga ลšwiฤ…tek in one of the tournament's biggest upsets.

She put up a determined fight against Jasmine Paolini, bouncing back to win the second set after dropping the first, but the Italian ultimately secured the deciding set to end Eala's historic run.

Despite the defeat, Eala made history as the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles tournament, showcasing yearsโ€™ worth of training, pure resilience, and world-class talent throughout the tournament, highlighted by her stunning dethroning of defending champion Iga ลšwiฤ…tek in the previous round.

The remarkable run also propelled Eala to a high WTA ranking, further cementing her status as one of the sport's brightest rising stars.

"It was a really challenging match today. I think Jasmine played great. I gave everything that I could. I did everything that I could do today, so I'm proud of that. I have to be proud of what I've achieved this week. Leaving with positive thoughts.โ€

Though her remarkable Wimbledon run came to an end, Ealaโ€™s breakthrough signaled the beginning of a promising new chapter in her tennis career.

With the recent eruptions of Mt. Kanlaon and Mayon Volcano, ashfall continues to affect several communities across the country.

While not all areas are directly impacted, understanding what to do during ashfall is essential to protecting yourself and those around you.

Preparedness is everyone's responsibility. Stay calm, avoid spreading misinformation, and always prioritize your safety and the well-being of those around you.

Almost any teenager you see right now has a social media account, given that we are living in the digital era. According to the National Library of Medicine, social media use by youth is nearly universal. Up to 95% of youth ages 13-17 report using a social media platform, with more than a third saying they use social media โ€œalmost constantly.โ€ We use this as a tool to connect, entertain, inform, and express ourselves. But because of the easy access, almost anyone can post anything. For the safety of kids, some have proposed banning social media for teens under 16. While protecting young people is important, banning social media is not the best solution.

Supporters would argue that the ban is necessary because of the violence social media is showing, which might influence some teens to engage in violent behavior. However, as stated by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, โ€œRather than being initiators or causes of violent behaviors, the Internet and social media specifically can be facilitators within wider processes of violent radicalization.โ€ Stating that social media does have a correlation, but it is not the enabler.

A study published by PubMed Central (PMC) in Prince Georgeโ€™s County, Maryland, shows that about 1.4% of every violent crime in this US county reveals that social media can play a role in some violent incidents.

Not only is there a low percentage, but the study only examined the involvement of social media in these violent crimes. It does not prove that social media was the root cause of those crimes. Violence is influenced by many factors such as mental health problems, family issues, poverty, etc.

Banning social media, which is the tool almost all teenagers use to get their daily news, entertainment, communication, and educational resources, would only limit an important source of information and a way to communicate. Instead of banning social media, we should strengthen our media and information literacy (MIL) in today's digital world. People are constantly bombarded with new information online, but not all of it is accurate. MIL equips an individual with the skills on how to properly analyze, evaluate, create, and share information responsibly. By strengthening these abilities, teenagers will become better at recognizing misinformation and critical thinking.

However, schools cannot do this alone. Parents also play an equally essential role, as their children's primary role models. By providing supervision, advice, and support, parents can guide their children in using social media responsibly, helping them understand both its benefits and its risks.

Additionally, we should also be vigilant about every student's mental health, not only for the school but also for the parents. Check their mental health, ask them if they are doing well, if they have any problems, and listen to their concerns, considering that good mental health helps children understand their emotions, think critically, and make responsible choices.

Ultimately, concerns about the negative effects of social media are valid. Banning it for teenagers under the age of 16 just isnโ€™t the most effective solution. Research shows that social media is just a contributing factor, not the cause. Instead of banning it completely, we should focus on education through media literacy, parental guidance, and mental health awareness. At the end of the day, social media is just a tool, and like any other tool, its impact depends not on its existence, but on how responsibly we choose to use it.

Waste segregation is more than just a simple taskโ€”it's a meaningful step toward protecting our environment. By properly separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, we help reduce pollution, support recycling efforts, and keep our surroundings clean and safe.

Every small action counts. When each of us chooses to dispose of our waste responsibly, we contribute to a healthier campus and a greener future. Together, our daily habits can create a lasting positive impact on our community.

Let's make waste segregation a way of life. Be responsible, inspire others to do the same, and remember that a cleaner environment starts with you. Every bin, every choice, every dayโ€”let's make a difference. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒโ™ป๏ธ

LAPU-LAPU CITY โ€” Ashfall from Mount Kanlaonโ€™s moderate eruption reached parts of Cebu on Thursday, prompting local government units to suspend face-to-face classes in affected areas, including Lapu-Lapu City.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the volcano erupted at 7:33 a.m., generating an ash plume that rose two to three kilometers above the summit crater. The eruptive activity lasted about three minutes and released an estimated 2,454 metric tons of sulfur dioxide (SOโ‚‚).

The Lapu-Lapu City Government ordered the suspension of classes, reducing the exposure of students, teachers, and school personnel to the volcanic ash. Schools were directed to monitor official advisories and implement appropriate safety measures.

PHIVOLCS reiterated that entry into the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) remains prohibited due to the continuing threat of sudden steam-driven or explosive eruptions. The state volcanology agency said Mount Kanlaon continues to be monitored for changes in volcanic activity.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health advised residents in areas affected by ashfall to wear N95 face masks or use a damp cloth to cover the nose and mouth when outdoors. Health officials also urged the public to keep doors and windows closed, protect food and water from ash contamination, and avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure.

Medical authorities warned that volcanic ash may cause irritation to the eyes, skin, nose, and throat and may aggravate respiratory conditions, particularly among children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory illnesses.

Residents were urged to monitor official advisories from PHIVOLCS and local disaster risk reduction and management offices for updates on volcanic activity and public safety.

As announced by Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia โ€œCindiโ€ King Chan, all classes in both public and private schools will resume tomorrow, July 13, 2026.

According to DOST-PAGASA, Typhoon โ€œBAVIโ€ (formerly โ€œINDAYโ€) has already exited the PAGASA monitoring domain, while DENR-7 said that the air quality in Cebu has improved following the volcanic ashfall from Mt. Kanlaon. Still, Mayor Chan reminded everyone to bring masks, stay safe, and sleep early.

Stay vigilant, Babaguenos!
