Abstract:
Public defense remains a critical requirement in graduate nursing education; however, its feasibility in terms of student readiness, institutional support, and overall effectiveness warrants further exploration. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of public defense among Master of Arts in Nursing (MAN) students through an interview-based qualitative approach. Using a phenomenological design, ten MAN students who recently underwent public defense were purposively selected. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed three key dimensions of feasibility: preparedness and capability of students, adequacy of institutional and faculty support, and perceived value of the defense process in enhancing research competence. While participants acknowledged challenges such as anxiety and time constraints, most affirmed that public defense is feasible when sufficient preparation and guidance are provided. The study concludes that public defense remains a viable and meaningful academic requirement, provided that structured support systems are in place to ensure student success.
