THIRD DAY: Agripino P. Santos Elementary School (APSES)
Activities during the Mid-Year Break

Agripjno P. Santos Elementary School (APSES), District II, Laoag City, conducted the Third Day Day Mid-Year Break Activities led by the school principal, Mr. Eufrecino R. Factores, together with the 24 teachers and 15 pre-service teachers from MMSU-CTE for the continuation of the curriculum implementation review and evaluation of the School’s Programs, Projects, and Activities (PPAs), as well as the topics for the INSET, February 8, 2023, at APSES Audio Visual Room.

Two pre-service teachers served as the facilitator for the preliminary activities of the Mid-Year Break. They provided the participants with a unique and interactive style of checking the attendance through cheers and yells. In addition, they also facilitated the recapitulation of the second-day activities just to give the teachers a glimpse of information about what have been discussed the previous day. Teachers have been participative to share their ideas on the different queries provided by the facilitators.

Radio-Television Based Instruction implementation was discussed by Mrs. Hazel T. Damian, Teacher III. She mentioned the participation of the APSES teachers in the Schools Division of Laoag City with the total number of scriptwriters, video editors, and video talent. APSES teachers continued to integrate video lessons in their classroom-based discussions. Mrs. Damian reiterated the importance of these video lessons to the performances and academic achievements of the learners. Therefore, the effective use of digital learning tools in classrooms can increase student engagement, help teachers improve their lesson plans, and facilitate personalized learning. It also helps students build essential 21st-century skills. However, still, it’s important to note that technology is a tool used in education and not an end. The promise of educational technology lies in what teachers do with it and how it is used to best support the learners’ needs.

Meanwhile, Ms. Madonna Mae T. Guerrero, Teacher III, and Mr. Virginio C. Andres Jr., Master Teacher I, had reported the implementation of Learning Activity Sheets used by the teachers during the pandemic until today. They further explain the features of learning activity sheets so that teachers may continuously develop instructional materials that would enhance the different abilities of the learners, as well as help the learners to master the least mastered competencies in their lessons. Ms. Guerrero cited in her discussion the SPED Functional Academic Package, activity sheets in Mathematics, English, and Science covering the K to 12 curriculum based on the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) of Special Education which was then validated by the SPED teachers and Mrs. Marilyn Pasion, Master Teacher II. Thus, the Learning Activity Sheet is developed to help learners continue learning even if they are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments.

Furthermore, the distribution and use of procured tablets have been talked over by Mrs. Grace May R. Miguel, Teacher III, which was based on the DepEd Order No. 18 s. 2020 known as Policy Guidelines for the provision of Learning Resources. Mrs. Miguel stated in her report that Tablets in the classroom allow both students and teachers to be connected and in direct communication at any time. All notes, tasks, or communications will be made and saved digitally, so it is difficult for them to get lost as can happen with hand-written notes. In addition, these devices allow learners to learn with material that is attractive to them in real-time (videos, podcasts, multimedia resources, etc.). Learners have instant access to individual research, and a huge knowledge base is available at their fingertips (for example, the thousands of websites and videos that can show sample lessons). Bear in mind that, being a tool with Internet access, learning difficult topics will be much faster and easier.

In the afternoon session, APSES teachers begin the In-Service Training on the Significance and Importance of Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in formative tests explained by Mr. Ricky Mark L. Ancheta, Teacher I. He said that higher-order questions put advanced cognitive demands on learners. They encourage learners to think beyond literal questions. Likewise, HOTS promote critical thinking skills because these types of questions expect students to apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information instead of simply recalling the fact.

Mrs. Marilyn A. Pasion, Master Teacher II, continued the presentation on HOTS to be integrated into test construction for periodical examinations. She even explained the number of items to be included in the Table of Specifications and the percentage of items included per area on Bloom’s Taxonomy. Further, she stated that the Table of Specifications helps to ensure that there is a match between what is taught and what is tested. Classroom assessment should be driven by classroom teaching which itself is driven by course goals and objectives. APSES teachers have been enlightened with the construction of periodical examinations and formative tests, activities, and exercises.

The seminar and workshop for the third day ended at exactly 5:00 in the afternoon.

SECOND DAY: Agripino P. Santos Elementary School (APSES)
Activities during the Mid-Year Break

Agripjno P. Santos Elementary School (APSES), District II, Laoag City, conducted the Second Day Mid-Year Break Activities led by the school principal, Mr. Eufrecino R. Factores, together with the 24 teachers and 15 pre-service teachers from MMSU-CTE for the continuation of the curriculum implementation review and evaluation of the School’s Programs, Projects, and Activities (PPAs), February 7, 2023, at APSES Audio Visual Room.

Two pre-service teachers served as the facilitator for the preliminary activities of the Mid-Year Break. They provided the participants with a unique and interactive style in checking the attendance through guess and check, imitating feelings and emotions, solving mathematical problems, as well as unlocking pictures.

Recapitulation of the first-day activities was then facilitated by Mr. Factores just to give the teachers a glimpse of information about what have been discussed the previous day. Teachers have been participative to share their ideas on the different queries provided by the school principal.

Curriculum review and implementation of the Homeroom Guidance (HG) is the first topic for the seminar and workshop today spearheaded by Ms. Ronalyn Valeriano, SPET I. APSES teachers strongly believe that every learner is unique and could develop themselves using their own learning and experiences from family, community, school, and society. Therefore, HG shall be realized through the collaborative efforts of all the agents of education. Moreover, she further explained the five procedures included in the HG such as Nomenclature, Medium of Instruction, Time Allotment, Class Program, and Teaching Load, which are essential for both the teachers and the learners including the administrators. In addition, she stated the roles and responsibilities of APSES teachers in the implementation of Homeroom Guidance SLMs during the pandemic. Ms. Valeriano claimed that the implementation of Homeroom Guidance SLMs of APSES was successfully done for the learners, parents, and guardians (HG School Report, S.Y. 2021-2022).

The next speaker is Marilyn A. Pasion, Master Teacher II has talked through the implementation of the Food Production Program of the school. She continued the development of the Gulayan sa Paaralan as one of the Income Generating projects of the school. Likewise, Mushroom Production which served as another income-generating project of the school. The school projects aim to: promote vegetable and mushroom production on the school campus; establish and maintain gardens as a ready food source of vegetables in sustaining supplementary feeding; and include among the learners the values of gardening, food production, good health and nutrition, love of labor, and caring for others. In addition, the said dood production program is an activity that aims to promote proper nutrition and mitigate hunger among learners. Eating the right number of fruits and vegetables will help develop the body and minds of the students, that is why APSES made the revival of the Gulayan sa Paaralan amidst Typhoon Maring.

Meanwhile, School Sports and Fitness Development Program was reported by Mr. Jaycie S. Cordero, Teacher I. He mentioned the different sports participation for the incoming Laoag City Athletic Association (LCAA) Meet. He identified players and coaches in his discussion as followed: Volleyball (Boys); Athletic (Boys and Girls); Board-Game Chess (Boys); and Badminton (Boys and Girls). He also gave emphasis on the importance of school physical education and the benefits that learners may receive.

On the other hand, the implementation of Self Learning Modules (SLMs) was reported by Mrs. Mitchell C. Albano, Teacher III. Teachers monitored their learners in distributing and retrieving modules through group chats, private messages, and even home visitation. Data on the report for the utilization of self-learning modules needed by the Division Office is also highlighted in her report. Teachers immediately take action on the needed reports for the Central Procured SLMs, Regionally Procured SLMs, and the Locally Developed Procured SLMs including the reports on the utilization of the materials.

Mr. Virginio C. Andres Jr., Master Teacher I, is in-charge in the dissemination of information about RPMS Tools on what Mode of Verifications (MOVs) should the teacher include in their papers. Teachers on his orientation obtained a clear understanding of the different tools of RPMS and for them to design implementation strategies as well as a strategic framework to provide support mechanisms at the school level. Through DepEd Number 42, s. 2017, Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) has been developed and nationally validated as part of reform initiatives on teacher quality. PPST set the standards on what teachers should know, be able to do, and value to achieve competence, improved student learning outcomes, and eventually quality education. It also articulated what constitutes teacher quality through well-defined domains, strands, and indicators that provide measures of professional accountability that could help teachers reflect on and assess their own practices as they aspire for professional growth and development.

The session ended at 5:00 PM with the supervision of Mrs. Imee Guerrero from SDO Laoag City.

The School-Based Reading Initiatives in English and Filipino were reported by Mrs. Geraldine Paulino and Mrs. Cinas T. Santos. They further explained the recently concluded FLAT results of the learners from Grade s1 to Grade 6. Through the teachers' effort in improving the reading level of the learners, they immediately asked help from the barangay officials of the community to cater some of the needs and demands of the learners in reading. Fortunately, this project initiative has been started since the Month of Reading Pagbasa which is also in light with the school program, "Basa mo, Para sa Kinabukasan Mo", School Year 2022-2023. Teachers had also shared their best practices not only in reading but also in building word recognition, spelling, creating sentences, forming words, and other educational games that can be used to strengthen their reading level and interest.

It was immediately followed the discussion on the implementation of Project TeleMath Go Math. Ms. Kate Ann P. Tomas delivered her report through interactive discussion. She made an intensive review for the GoMath materials as she emphasized the integration of 5Es within the modules. She also claimed that these materials were aligned to the K to 12 Curriculum based on Most Essential Learning Competencies. The materials included interesting games, problem-solving strategy to enhance critical thinking skills and abilities, puzzles, word problems to arouse learners' interest in solving, and self-paced study through clear explanations.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Shane M. Gamiao talk through English Language, Litearcy and Numeracy (ELLN) Program. This program focuses on capacitating the Kindergarten to Grade 3 teachers and instructional leaders on the basic knowledge and pedagogical skills in literacy and numeracy and in establishing and managing a school-based mentoring/learning partnership program as a mechanism for the continuous professional development of teachers/mentors, teachers/mentees, school managers and instructional leaders and an avenue for teachers to listen to storytelling and read-aloud activities from the best storytellers. She mentioned some activities that will help learners to develop his potential to improve his reading abilities and Numeracy starting from Grades 1 to Grade 3.

Moreover, fourth topic has been discussed by Mr. Ricky Mark L. Ancheta which is the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE). He further explained the meaning of CSE in the integration of K to 12 Curriculum for the five subjects mainly, AP, MAPEH, ESP, Science, and Personal Development including Kindergarten Curriculum. He showed evidence in the implementation of CSE in the campus like orientation of parents, learners, and barangay officials, dissemination of information through group chats, integration of CSE in the programs of school like the celebration of the 27th Philippine National Autism Week, Health Week 2023, Teacher's Day, Student's Day 2022 and even during Flag Raising Ceremony. Teachers were also implemented the CSE activity sheets provided by teachers in their instructional materials.

Last topic for the day has been discussed by Mrs. Chrsyta T. Tayamen on Inclusive Education and Special Education. A lot of questions have been raised by the teachers whereas healthy discussion is observed during the delivery of the topic. Exchange of ideas on Inclusive Education in transition program has also been highlighted as one of the problems unlock during the discussion. Nonetheless, it's very informative and interesting to learn more programs of the inclusive and special education. Indeed, teachers had used their maximum tolerance to understand and appreciate the delivered concepts of the inclusive education.

Development and construction of outputs became the last part of the Mid-Year Break Activities of APSES teachers and school head. Exactly ended at 5:00 PM.
