NWU Champions Peer Support for Su***de Prevention Month

Northwestern University strengthens its culture of care and connection as Northwesternians come together for “Minds That Matter: Connecting for Well-Being & Strengthening Peer Support,” a day-long observance of Su***de Prevention Month held at the Guidance Center Garden on September 18, 2026.

Organized by the NWU Guidance Center in collaboration with the Peer Facilitators Club and Psych Society, the activity highlights the role of compassion, meaningful connection, and peer support in promoting mental well-being within the University community.

The celebration begins with the distribution of purple and green ribbons and bookmarks bearing encouraging messages, inviting Northwesternians to carry the advocacy for mental health awareness and su***de prevention beyond the day’s activities.

Students also take part in an interactive mirror activity, writing messages of affirmation and encouragement as reminders of self-worth, reflection, and the importance of caring for one’s well-being.

Music provides another space for connection through “Nota at Pahinga,” featuring a performance by Saguday After 5 and giving students an opportunity to pause, relax, and enjoy music amid the day’s activities.

Alongside the campus celebration, student leaders gather at the NWU Hostel for a Psychological Skills Training organized by the Guidance Center in collaboration with the Peer Facilitators Club. The training equips students with practical approaches to providing appropriate support to peers who may be experiencing distress.

Mr. Sherward Frez Cabrales of the Philippine Red Cross introduces participants to the three action principles of Psychological First Aid: Look, Listen, and Link.

He emphasizes the importance of recognizing immediate needs, listening without judgment, and connecting individuals with appropriate professional support when necessary.

Cabrales also calls for changing the perception of guidance offices as places students visit only when they have done something wrong.

“I am advocating that the Guidance Center office will be the safe haven for those vulnerable,” he shares, underscoring the importance of creating spaces where students feel safe to seek help and support.

Ms. Stephanie Marie Valiente, Associate Director of the NWU Guidance Center, further discusses the responsibilities and limitations of peer supporters during her session, “Know Your Role: Boundaries, Confidentiality, and Proper Referral in Peer Support.”

She reminds participants that supporting a peer does not mean having all the answers.

“You, as peer supporters, sana maiwan sa inyong mga isipan to listen. You don't have to have all the answers for their problem. They just need a listening ear, empathic listening. Set boundaries and care without carrying,” Valiente says.

Through both celebration and skills development, “Minds That Matter” reinforces the value of building a University community where students know that support is available, conversations about mental well-being are welcomed, and seeking help is treated as an important part of caring for oneself and others.

As Northwestern University observes Su***de Prevention Month, the initiative carries a message beyond September: every conversation, act of compassion, and willingness to listen can help strengthen a community where no mind stands alone.

Northwestern University, in partnership with the Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management Philippines (A-PAD PH), holds the Going GREEN Awareness Campaign on DRRM and Climate Change Measures on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at SM City Laoag.

Facilitated by the Human Resources Network of Ilocos Norte (HRN-Ilocos Norte), with the participation of student organizations from the NWU College of Allied Health Sciences, the activity engages youth from the coastal barangays of Gabu in discussions on climate change, coastal community resilience, disaster risk reduction, and climate change adaptation.

As one of the culminating activities, participants paint eco bags carrying messages that promote climate change awareness and environmental responsibility.

The initiative is made possible with the support of the People of Japan through A-PAD Philippines, strengthening collective efforts toward safer, cleaner, and more resilient communities.

With an 81.48% passing rate among first-time takers, NWU once again celebrates the hard work of our graduates and the dedication of our Nursing faculty.

Northwestern University College of Allied Health Sciences proudly congratulates its 178 newly registered nurses who successfully passed the August 2026 Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination.

The University achieved an 81.48% passing rate among first-time takers, surpassing the 76.69% national passing rate.

This milestone reflects the dedication of our graduates, the commitment of our faculty, and the University’s pursuit of excellence in nursing education.

NWU, DLSU-D forge three-year academic partnership

Northwestern University (NWU) and De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) strengthen academic cooperation through a three-year Memorandum of Understanding that opens opportunities in education, research, extension, community engagement, and sustainability.

NWU President Atty. Ferdinand S. Nicolas and DLSU-D President Br. Iñigo R. Riola FSC, EdD sign the agreement during a virtual ceremony on September 15, establishing a framework for collaboration across all academic disciplines.

Under the agreement, NWU and DLSU-D may undertake academic benchmarking, faculty and student mobility programs, joint seminars and guest lectures, institutional visits, fieldwork, and community-based initiatives.

The partnership also opens opportunities for collaborative research, co-authored publications, funded projects, and the shared use of facilities. The universities may establish research clusters in priority areas such as sustainability, governance, health, technology, and cultural heritage.

“As an alumnus of La Salle Green Hills, I am happy to be creating this linkage with De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, knowing that both of our institutions can learn many things from one another,” Nicolas said.

He expressed particular interest in learning from DLSU-D’s sustainability practices and applying relevant approaches at NWU.

“One thing I am especially interested in is the recognition of DLSU-D as the most sustainable university in the Philippines by UI GreenMetric. This is something we want to emulate in line with our advocacy for environmental protection and conservation,” Nicolas added.

The MOU also identifies possible cooperation in digital transformation, renewable energy, governance, and cultural heritage. It allows the institutions to explore interdisciplinary programs and dual-degree opportunities, subject to regulatory approval.

Joint extension and outreach projects may also be developed to support communities in Ilocos Norte and Cavite, particularly in education, sustainability, health, and social responsibility.

Specific activities under the partnership will be formalized through separate agreements, project proposals, or addenda. Both universities will designate focal offices or coordinators to oversee implementation and monitoring.

The MOU will remain effective for three years and may be renewed upon mutual agreement.
