Northwestern University officially breaks ground for the Eco-Charge Project, marking another milestone in the University's commitment to sustainability, innovation, and environmental stewardship.
The groundbreaking ceremony ushers in the development of a 7 kWh Solar Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station in collaboration with Busilac Builders, Inc., through a 50-50 cost-sharing partnership that demonstrates a shared investment in advancing green infrastructure and renewable energy solutions.
Designed to harness clean solar energy and incorporate recycled materials from the University's former Science Building, the Eco-Charge Project promotes circular economy practices while creating a future-ready campus. Beyond supporting electric vehicles, the facility is envisioned to serve as an alternative power source for nearby campus lighting and as a living laboratory for renewable energy and sustainable engineering.
The ceremony is attended by the University President, Atty. Ferdinand S. Nicolas, Executive Vice President and Chairman of the Board, Ma. Liza Nicolas, Vice President for Administration, Prof. Karl Lenin Benigno, other University Officials, and the President of Busilac Builders, Inc., reaffirming a shared commitment to building a smarter, greener, and more sustainable Northwestern University.

Northwestern University breaks ground on July 14, 2026, at 3:00 PM for the Eco-Charge Project, a sustainable 7 kWh Solar Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station that advances the Universityβs commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship.
The project is undertaken in collaboration with Busilac Builders, Inc. through a 50-50 cost-sharing partnership, reflecting a shared investment in cleaner and more sustainable mobility for the NWU community. As part of the collaboration, Busilac Builders, Inc. also provides training for the NWU Physical Plant and Development Office (PPDO) on the installation and technical aspects of the solar EV charging system, helping build in-house capability for future operations and maintenance.
Powered by high-efficiency monocrystalline solar panels and supported by a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery system, the facility provides clean energy for electric vehicles on campus. The project also gives new life to materials from the Universityβs former Science Building by utilizing crushed recycled concrete and salvaged steel trusses, helping reduce construction waste and lower the projectβs embodied carbon footprint through a circular economy approach.
Beyond vehicle charging, the station is designed to serve as an alternative power source for nearby lighting and selected campus facilities. It also becomes a valuable learning space for Engineering and Environmental Science students to study renewable energy and material recycling in real time.
Tomorrowβs groundbreaking marks another step toward building a smarter, greener, and more future-ready Northwestern University.
