😊Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation

✔️Correct grammar, punctuation and spelling are key in written communications. The reader will form an opinion of you, the author, based on both the content and presentation, and errors are likely to lead them to form a negative impression.

If you are unconvinced about the importance of accurate writing, think of the clues we use to identify spam emails, “phishing” websites, and counterfeit products: poor grammar and spelling.

✔️Similarly, some employers state publicly that any CV or résumé containing spelling or grammatical mistakes will be rejected immediately, whilst a BBC news article quotes research that calculates spelling mistakes cost online businesses “millions” in lost sales.

✔️Checking for poor writing and spelling mistakes should be seen as a courtesy to your readers since it can take them much longer to understand the messages in your writing if they have to think and re-read text to decipher these.

✔️All written communications should therefore be re-read before sending to print, or hitting the send button in the case of emails, as it is likely that there will be errors. Do not assume that spelling and grammar checkers will identify all mistakes as many incorrect words can indeed be spelt correctly (for example, when “their” is used instead of “there” or “principle” instead of “principal”) or entire words may be missing. If at all possible, take a break before re-reading and checking your writing, as you are more likely to notice problems when you read it fresh.

✔️Even if you know spelling and grammar rules, you should still double-check your work or, even better, have it proof-read by somebody else. Our brains work faster than our fingers can type and accidental typographical errors (typos) inevitably creep in.

😊Many people struggle with writing in English and it can seem like a real challenge to improve. Don’t worry, though. Here are some simple steps that you can take to improve your written English and impress people with your writing skills.
✔️1. Expand your vocabulary
To express yourself clearly, you need a good active vocabulary. That’s not just being able to recognise lots of words – it means actually being able to use them correctly. Do this by learning new words with example sentences, not just word lists.
✔️2. Master English spelling
You must know how to spell those words correctly. Incorrect spelling changes the meaning of your sentence. For example: ‘bare’ and ‘bear’ sound the same but ‘bare’ means naked and ‘bear’ is a large animal. Additionally, incorrect spelling makes it difficult for the reader to understand what you’ve written.
✔️3. Read regularly
People often say that we learn to write best by reading. Reading in English is useful in many ways. It is a great way to get an idea of the different styles of writing and see how to use words appropriately.
✔️4. Improve your grammar
Grammar is very important because it improves the quality of your writing. Always use the appropriate tense and remember to use punctuation. Punctuation is a great way to make your writing clear and fluent.
✔️5. Just do it!
Writing can be daunting. However, the best way to improve is get a pen and paper or sit in front of your computer and actually write. Be prepared to write several versions of each text because even for professional writers, the first draft is never perfect. Remember, practice makes perfect, so now is the best time to sit down and get started with our free English quizzes!

😊A sentence fragment is a group of words that looks like a sentence, but actually isn’t a complete sentence. Sentence fragments are usually missing a subject or verb, or they do not express a complete thought. While it may be punctuated to look like a complete sentence, a fragment cannot stand on its own.

✔️Distinguishing Features
Here are the distinguishing features of a sentence fragment:

✔️It is missing a subject
Example: Ran to the store faster than a rabbit. (Who ran?)
✔️It is missing a verb or has the wrong verb form
Example: My favorite history teacher. (What did the teacher do or say?)
✔️It is a leftover phrase
Example: For better or worse. (What is better or worse? What is it modifying?)
✔️It is an abandoned clause
Example: When my mother married my father. (What happened when “my mother married my father?”)
✔️It is a misuse of “such as, for example, especially,” etc.
Example: Such as, my brother was practicing martial arts. (It is unclear; did something happen when my brother was practicing martial arts?)

😊BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURE
✔️Parts of Sentences: Subject, Predicate, Object, Indirect Object, Complement

✔️Every word in a sentence serves a specific purpose within the structure of that particular sentence. According to rules of grammar, sentence structure can sometimes be quite complicated. For the sake of simplicity, however, the basic parts of a sentence are discussed here.

✔️The two most basic parts of a sentence are the subject and predicate.
✔️✔️SUBJECT
The subject of a sentence is the person, place, or thing that is performing the action of the sentence. The subject represents what or whom the sentence is about. The simple subject usually contains a noun or pronoun and can include modifying words, phrases, or clauses.

✔️VPREDICATE
The predicate expresses action or being within the sentence. The simple predicate contains the verb and can also contain modifying words, phrases, or clauses.
The subject and predicate make up the two basic structural parts of any complete sentence. In addition, there are other elements, contained within the subject or predicate, that add meaning or detail. These elements include the direct object, indirect object, and subject complement. All of these elements can be expanded and further combined into simple, compound, complex, or compound/complex sentences.
DIRECT OBJECT
The direct object receives the action of the sentence. The direct object is usually a noun or pronoun.

✔️✔️INDIRECT OBJECT
The indirect object indicates to whom or for whom the action of the sentence is being done. The indirect object is usually a noun or pronoun.

✔️✔️SUBJECT COMPLEMENT
A subject complement either renames or describes the subject, and therefore is usually a noun, pronoun, or adjective. Subject complements occur when there is a linking verb within the sentence (often a linking verb is a form of the verb to be).

😊Reading comprehension is defined as the ability to analyze text, comprehend its meaning, and integrate it with prior knowledge.
Knowing the meaning of words, being able to understand the meaning of a word in context, being able to follow the organization of a passage and identify antecedents and references in it, being able to draw inferences from a passage about its contents, being able to identify the main thought of a passage, being able to answer questions answered in a passage, being able to recognize literary devices or propositional. Communicated for statements, questioning, commanding, withholding, and lastly the capacity to determine the writer's goal, intent, and point of view, as well as form assumptions about the writer (discourse-semantics).
Improving one's vocabulary, critical text analysis (intertextuality, actual occurrences vs. narrative of events, etc.) and practicing deep reading are just a few reading practices that can help one increase reading comprehension and conclusions. When word recognition is difficult, pupils devote too much of their cognitive capacity on reading individual words, impairing their ability to grasp what is being read.

😊The Importance of Communication Skills
When trying to increase your capacity to communicate successfully with people, keep the following in mind:
✔️1. Listening
It is critical to be a good listener in order to become a good communicator. It's critical to practice active listening, which is paying close attention to what people are saying and clarifying any ambiguities by rephrasing their inquiries for better comprehension.
✔️2. Conciseness
Use as few words as possible to convey your message. Don't waste time with filler words; instead, get right to the point. The listener will tune out or be unsure of what you're talking about if you ramble.
✔️3. Body language
When talking with others, it is critical to use good body language, maintain eye contact, make hand gestures, and listen to the tone of your voice. A relaxed body stance combined with a kind tone will help you appear approachable to others.
✔️4. Confidence
Be self-assured in what you say and in your dealings with others. Maintaining eye contact, maintaining a calm body stance, and speaking with precision can all help you feel more secure.
✔️5. Open-mindedness
When you disagree with what someone else says, whether it's an employer, a coworker, or a friend, it's crucial to sympathize with their point of view rather than merely trying to get your point over.
✔️6. Respect
Respecting and appreciating what others have to say is a crucial component of communication. Paying attention to what they have to say, using their name, and not being distracted are all examples of being respectful.
✔️7. Using the correct medium
There are numerous types of communication to choose from; it's crucial to pick the proper one. For example, speaking with someone in person about significant issues (layoffs, wage changes, etc.) is preferable to sending an email.

😊Grammar (noun): the structure and system of a language, or of languages in general, usually considered to consist of syntax and morphology
✔️Think of grammar as a signpost
Grammar is the system of a language. People sometimes describe grammar as the "rules" of a language; but in fact no language has rules*. If we use the word "rules", we suggest that somebody created the rules first and then spoke the language, like a new game. But languages did not start like that. Languages started by people making sounds which evolved into words, phrases and sentences. No commonly-spoken language is fixed. All languages change over time. What we call "grammar" is simply a reflection of a language at a particular time.

✔️Do we need to study grammar to learn a language? The short answer is "no". Very many people in the world speak their own, native language without having studied its grammar. Children start to speak before they even know the word "grammar". But if you are serious about learning a foreign language, the long answer is "yes, grammar can help you to learn a language more quickly and more efficiently." It's important to think of grammar as something that can help you, like a friend. When you understand the grammar (or system) of a language, you can understand many things yourself, without having to ask a teacher or look in a book.

✔️So think of grammar as something good, something positive, something that you can use to find your way - like a signpost or a map.
*Except invented languages like Esperanto. And if Esperanto were widely spoken, its rules would soon be very different.

😊Everyday vs. Every Day
✔️Everyday is an adjective we use to describe something that’s seen or used every day. It means “ordinary” or “typical.”
✔️Every day is a phrase that simply means “each day.”
✔️What is the difference between everyday and every day?
✔️The conundrum of everyday vs. everyday is not unusual. These two terms have the same issues as anytime and any time, or anyone and anyone—compounds can cause a lot of misunderstanding. So, let's take a look at how we define and use every day.
Everyday
✔️Everyday (as a single word) is a noun. Average, humdrum, ordinary, and standard are all synonyms in thesauruses. "Everyday apparel," on the other hand, refers to the clothes you wear on a regular basis, as opposed to ensembles for special occasions or holidays. Everyday is occasionally used as a noun, as a shorthand manner of referring to one's daily activities.

Each and every day
✔️Every day means "every day." The simplest way to remember this is to consider the space between the two words. "Every" is only an adjective that modifies the word "day" because of that space. If you put every in front of any other word, it signifies each—every day means "each day," just as "every word" means "each word."

If you're still having trouble telling the difference between everyday and every day and aren't sure when to use which, remember that you can easily replace "every" with "each" in every day. For example, if you're talking about how often you wear green pants, you'd say "I wear green pants every day." It still makes sense if you replace "every" with "each." On the other hand, because there is no such word, you can't say "I wear pants every day."

😊Whose vs. Who's

✔️Who's is a contraction of who is and who has, with whose being the possessive form of who. They may sound the same, but precisely spelling them can be difficult. To understand the distinction between who's and whose, consider the following.

✔️Who’s vs. Whose
Both who’s and whose come from the pronoun who (shocking, right?).
Who’s is a contraction, meaning it’s two words stuck together. The formula: who + is, or who + has.
For example: who’s hungry?
Whose is a possessive pronoun. Use it when you’re asking (or telling) to whom something belongs.
For example: whose sandwich is this?

✔️More detail is required when "whom" is required to describe what "whose" means. Plus, despite the fact that who's is a contraction and whose is possessive, when you combine the two, you sound like a sleeping owl. This is due to the fact that these two words are homophones, which means they sound the same yet have different meanings. Continue reading this explanation of who's vs. whose to keep your apostrophes where they belong.

15/11/2021

😊A and An are indefinite articles.
When referring to an uncertain entity or number, we utilize indefinite articles. When we don't know (or don't care) what we're talking about, we utilize them.

✔️There once was a sheep.
Since I don’t know which sheep it was—that is, I don’t know its name, where it’s from, or anything about it—I can’t say the sheep.

✔️How to Use the Indefinite Articles A vs. An
The two indefinite articles in English are a and an. The indefinite article an is used to make pronunciation easier when reading a text aloud. The general rule is to use a when the indefinite article precedes a word beginning with a consonant sound and an when it precedes a word starting with a vowel sound.

✔️1 Use a when the indefinite article comes before a word beginning with a consonant sound: a toy a book a house

✔️2 Use an when the indefinite article comes before a word beginning with a vowel sound:

an operation an idea an apple

✔️Exceptions
It’s important to note that not all nouns that begin with a consonant begin with the consonant sound. Always trust the sound, not the letter when applying the a vs. an rule. Remember, it’s about pronunciation. Consider the examples below:

a hourglass
an hourglass
a honor
an honor
Likewise, there are some nouns beginning with a vowel that make a consonant sound. In these cases, the indefinite article a should be used:

an university
a university
an one-eyed pirate
a one-eyed pirate
Using A vs. An with Acronyms
These same rules apply to acronyms:

A Society of Writers member was quoted in the article.
A S.O.W. member was quoted in the article.
An S.O.W. member was quoted in the article.
Because S sounds like it begins with a vowel (ess), an should be used in front of it.
