The ASEAN Language and Culture Exchange (LACE) program participants explored the history, heritage, traditions, food, daily life, and languages of Cambodia and Vietnam for the third session on August 19, 2026.
Bringing together higher education institutions from across Southeast Asia for another enriching cultural exchange, the session highlighted how language goes beyond communication and serves as an important reflection of a peopleโs identity, history, and culture.
The Cambodian session was facilitated by Ms. Sim Sreynon, with engaging presentations from students at Dewey International University, Cambodia highlighting different aspects of Cambodian culture and everyday life. Soeun Sothearith shared insights into Cambodiaโs history and heritage, while Sipha Rattanakphorn discussed its culture and traditions. Yam Lygheach explored Cambodian food and daily life, while EamHong Eab introduced participants to the Khmer language and Khmer script.
"Todayโs session reminded us that learning a language is not simply learning words. It is a way of understanding culture, building connections, and strengthening our appreciation of our ASEAN neighbors,' said Zendle Ann Binobo of West Visayas State University.
The Khmer session was co-facilitated by Filamer Christian University, Philippines and Dewey International University, Cambodia.
For Vietnam, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Hang of the Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry shared insights into the countryโs heritage and language, providing participants with another glimpse into the rich cultural identity of the ASEAN country.
The Vietnam session was facilitated by National University โ Fairview, Philippines.
More than learning facts about Cambodia and Vietnam, the session reminded the participants of the value of respecting differences, appreciating diversity, and building friendships across cultures.
โI realized that cultural differences should not divide us, instead, they can strengthen cooperation and friendship among ASEAN countries,โ said Jebcelle Villeza of Filamer Christian University.
