School Violence: The Growing Problem Among Students
The growing problem of student violence has a serious impact on schools in the Philippines. A tragic school shooting in Tacloban, which reportedly killed three students and injured 20 people, shows how dangerous violence can become in a school setting. Such incidents remind us that schools must always be prepared for emergencies. This is why many schools in the Philippines conduct safety and emergency drills to help students and teachers respond properly during dangerous situations.
Schools should be places where students learn, grow, and feel safe. They should serve as a second home where learners can develop their skills without fear. However, the increasing cases of violence can make students feel unsafe and afraid to attend school. This is a serious concern that schools, parents, teachers, and communities must address.
Violence can result from different factors, including bullying, harassment, threats, and public humiliation. These behaviors may cause emotional distress and, when left unaddressed, can sometimes escalate into more serious conflicts. Schools must therefore strengthen their anti-bullying programs, encourage students to report threats and harmful behavior, and teach respect and peaceful conflict resolution.
Keeping schools safe is not the responsibility of teachers alone. Students, parents, school administrators, and the entire community must work together to prevent violence. Every learner deserves to study in an environment where they feel protected, respected, and valued.
A safe school is not only a place without violence, it is a place where every student feels secure enough to learn and grow.**
