NEWS| Tucalana Elementary, SK, Parents join hands to boost literacy through ARAL Program

Tucalana Elementary School has formalized a partnership with the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Barangay Tucalana and parents to launch the ARAL Program, an initiative designed to strengthen reading and writing skills among young learners struggling with basic literacy.

The program targets eight Key Stage 1 students identified as being at the frustration levelโ€”those unable to read and writeโ€”providing them with focused, intensive support. Under the agreement, members of the SK will serve as tutors, leading the learning sessions and providing direct guidance to the learners. Meanwhile, the school will supply all necessary learning materials and resources to support the activities, handle progress monitoring, and oversee the overall implementation. Parents, on the other hand, will reinforce lessons at home and actively participate in program activities.

Stakeholders highlighted that this collaboration bridges school and community efforts, ensuring no child is left behind. Youth leaders noted that investing in literacy builds a stronger future for the barangay, while parents expressed confidence that shared support will help their children improve.

With structured sessions and regular assessments, the ARAL Program aims to help learners reach grade-level proficiency and serve as a model for similar community-based education initiatives.

NEWS| Tucalana ES scouts take lead in weekly flag-raising ceremonies

In line with Division Memorandum No. 252, s. 2026 issued by the Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division of Cagayan, Tucalana Elementary School has officially mobilized its registered Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to lead the weekly Monday flag-raising ceremony, starting today, June 15, 2026.

This initiative is a joint effort between DepEd and the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) and Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP), designed to strengthen values formation, patriotism, and citizenship development among learners. As directed, Tucalana ES scouts now take active roles in planning, organizing, and conducting the ceremony, strictly observing the provisions of Republic Act No. 8491 or the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, which sets the standards for the proper handling, display, and respect for the national flag.

Clad in their official scout uniforms, the schoolโ€™s scout members led the morning ceremony with discipline and pride, showcasing leadership skills and a deep sense of love for country. Wearing the prescribed uniform is encouraged under the memorandum to foster discipline, leadership, and pride in the scouting movement.

According to the memorandum, this arrangement will continue every Monday thereafter, making the flag-raising ceremony a regular platform for scouts to practice their roles as responsible and patriotic citizens.

Brenda Avon F. Bolando, TES School Head emphasized that this activity goes beyond complianceโ€”it is a meaningful way to instill core values in every learner, with scouts serving as role models for their fellow students.

The school community expressed full support for the program, noting that it adds a meaningful and structured dimension to the weekly school assembly, while giving young learners a chance to lead and serve their school and country.

Law enforcement authorities underscored the importance of parental involvement in preventing child abuse, bullying, and violence against women and children during an orientation attended by parents of learners at Tucalana Elementary School (TES).

Speaking during the school's General Parent Orientation on June 11, Patrolwoman Daphny L. Reoliquio of the PNP Lal-lo Municipal Police Station emphasized the role of families in ensuring that children grow up in safe, nurturing, and violence-free environments.

โ€œThis activity aims to increase awareness among parents about the laws that safeguard children and families. When parents are informed, they become stronger partners in protecting the welfare of their children,โ€ Reoliquio said.

Among the topics presented was Republic Act No. 7610, or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act, which provides legal protection for minors against various forms of maltreatment, neglect, and exploitation.

She stressed that parents should remain attentive to their children's behavior, activities, and well-being to help identify possible risks and concerns at an early stage.

โ€œNapakahalaga ng paggabay ng mga magulang sa kanilang mga anak. Sa pamamagitan ng tamang impormasyon at komunikasyon, mas maiiwasan natin ang mga sitwasyong maaaring magdulot ng panganib sa mga bata,โ€ she said.

Reoliquio likewise tackled the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013, highlighting the need for cooperation between families and schools in addressing incidents that may affect learners' emotional and psychological welfare.

According to her, bullying remains a concern in many educational settings and requires timely intervention from responsible adults to prevent its adverse effects on children's development.

โ€œAng pambubully ay hindi dapat binabalewala. Mahalaga ang agarang pagtugon at pakikipagtulungan ng lahat upang mapanatili ang isang ligtas at maayos na kapaligiran para sa mga mag-aaral,โ€ she said.

The session also included a discussion on Violence Against Women and Their Children (VAWC), focusing on the rights of women and children and the mechanisms available for protection and legal assistance.

The activity formed part of ongoing efforts by school officials and partner agencies to strengthen awareness on child protection and promote a culture of respect, responsibility, and care within the school community.

Reoliquio said the Philippine National Police continues to support educational institutions through information campaigns that equip parents and learners with knowledge on child safety, responsible citizenship, and violence prevention.

โ€œAng proteksyon sa mga bata ay hindi lamang tungkulin ng paaralan o ng pulisya. Ito ay pananagutan ng bawat magulang at ng buong komunidad,โ€ she said.

The orientation served as one of the school's initiatives at the opening of School Year 2026โ€“2027 to encourage stronger collaboration among parents, educators, and government agencies in safeguarding the rights and welfare of every learner.

FEATURE| Colors of Freedom: Tucalana ES learners celebrate Independence Day through art

While classrooms remained quiet and regular lessons were put on hold in observance of the 128th Philippine Independence Day, the spirit of patriotism remained alive among the learners of Tucalana Elementary School as they participated in a meaningful Flag Drawing and Coloring Activity.

Armed with crayons, colored pencils, and boundless creativity, the young learners transformed blank sheets of paper into vibrant symbols of freedom. Each stroke of blue, red, yellow, and white reflected not only artistic talent but also an appreciation of the nation's history and identity. As they carefully drew and colored the Philippine flag, the activity became more than just an art exerciseโ€”it became a simple yet powerful lesson on patriotism.

For many learners, the Philippine flag served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Filipino heroes who fought for the country's freedom. Through this activity, they were encouraged to understand the significance of the national colors and symbols while expressing their love for the nation in their own creative ways. Even outside the traditional classroom setting, learning continued as children reflected on the values of courage, unity, and nationalism.

The activity also demonstrated that meaningful education extends beyond textbooks and regular school days. By engaging learners in creative and reflective tasks during the Independence Day celebration, Tucalana Elementary School reinforced the importance of preserving national pride among the younger generation. Parents and guardians likewise played an essential role in supporting their children as they completed their artworks at home.

As colorful flags emerged from the hands of the learners, they became symbols of hope and gratitudeโ€”proof that the legacy of independence continues to inspire young Filipinos. Through simple acts of creativity and remembrance, the learners of Tucalana Elementary School proudly honored the nation's freedom, showing that patriotism can be celebrated anytime and anywhere.
