Basil (๐๐ค๐ช๐ฎ๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ฃ๐ข๐ด๐ช๐ญ๐ช๐ค๐ถ๐ฎ) is an upright herbaceous plant that can be grown as an annual or, in certain regions, as a short-lived perennial. It can reach as high as 50 cm and can grow even taller depending on the variety. Other types include sweet basil, Thai basil, lemon basil, and holy basil.
Hereโs how to grow, harvest, and store Basil for the best flavor ๐
Basil germination requires an ideal temperature of 20ยฐC with optimal growing conditions between 7ยฐC โ 27ยฐC
โข In the dryland, it needs a minimum of 700 mm of rainfall
โข Basil thrives in well-drained soils, ideally with a pH level of 6.4
Basil can be planted through seeds or transplanting
โข In direct seeding, space the seed 3โ6 mm deep, 5 cm apart
โข In cuttings propagation, short cuttings are suspended in water for ~2 weeks until roots develop
โข Fertilizer application depends on various factors such as soil type, previous crops, and the fertilizers used for those crops
โข Basil requires constant irrigation during the growing season; if rainfall is not enough, it needs to be irrigated with sprinklers or a hose.
To control w**ds, apply organic mulch such as straw, composted leaves or grass clipping
โข Hand-pull the w**ds or use a hoe during the early growth stages
โข Till and solarize the soil before planting to kill w**d seeds
โข Space properly the Basil to encourage canopy formation that shades out emerging w**ds
โข Avoid herbicides due to its sensitivity and edibility
โข Apply organic solutions like neem oil spray, insecticidal soup, companion planting, and sanitation.
โข To manage Basilโs pest and disease effectively, itโs essential to adhere to standard disease and pest control protocols
Harvest Basil before flowering when the plant is full and leafy, having the most concentrated essential oil.
โข Harvest early in the morning to preserve the essential oils.
โข Harvest can be done every 2-3 weeks during the growing season
โข Frequent harvesting encourages bushier growth and helps delay flowering
โข Just cut above a pair of healthy leaves or leaf nodes (~ยผ inch) to promote two new branches from that point
โข Keep at least 1/3 of the plant (4-6 inches) for regrowth
โข In case of mature, multi-stemmed plants, cut down to half the plantโs height, as long as leaves remain below the cut.
Harvested Basil should first be washed and cleaned of impurities.
โข Refrigerate as soon as possible
โข Grade basil from its color, aroma, and texture
โข Handle basil with care, minimize bruising when harvesting and packaging.
โข Pack in bulk or in bunches using a plastic bag or similar packaging used for herbs.
Fresh basil: can be stored at a temperature of between 8 and 10ยฐC to prolong its shelf life, ranging from 7 to 10 days.
โข Dried basil: can be stored in dark, air-tight containers
Air-dry-harvested basil by hanging bundled stems upside-down in a dark, dry, ventilated space. This retains the oils well.
โข Use a dehydrator for quicker drying without major oil loss.
โข As a last resort, use an oven with the lowest setting with the door ajar, but risk of flavor loss if too hot.
โข Avoid exposure to the sun as it degrades chlorophyll and essential oils.
โข Leaves should be crisp and crumble easily when dry

Mint is an aromatic herb valued for its cooling flavor and healing qualities. The leaves release a pleasant, sweet scent, and their essential oils provide a uniquely refreshing, cool taste. Mint is cultivated in various regions, including Canada, Europe, Britain, Australia, Japan, Africa, and New Zealand. Notably, India and China are the largest producers of mint oil in Asia.
To successfully grow your own mint, remember the following:
๐
โ
๐๐น๐ถ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ & ๐ฆ๐ผ๐ถ๐น ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐พ๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐
โข Mint can thrive in both tropical and sub-tropical regions with temperatures ranging between 20ยฐC-40ยฐC, with a rainfall of 100-110 cm.
โข The soil should be well-drained loam or sandy loam rich in organic matter, having a pH of 6.0-8.2. Red and black soil can be used, but it is recommended to apply lime when it is acidic, with a pH below 5.5.
โข Avoid waterlogged soil. This may lead to poor growth or plant loss.
โข Before planting, it is essential to analyze soil samples to assess fertility levels.
Mint can thrive in pots, which is an excellent choice for home gardening.
โข The planting area should offer morning sunlight and afternoon shade for optimal growth.
โข Planting distance should be about 15 inches apart to allow room to develop
โข When planting in pots, consider using soilless potting mix (perlite, vermiculite, coco peat)
โข If planted in a garden bed, apply mulch to retain moisture and control w**ds
โข Apply nitrogen to promote vigorous vegetative growth and maximize leaf development
โข Water at least three times a week to maintain soil moisture, but ensure proper drainage
Remove annual grasses promptly.
โข Apply crop rotation with non-susceptible crops to control various diseases, including rust, verticillium wilt, leaf spot disease, and anthracnose.
Harvest your mint sprigs before the plant begins to flower, or 10% of the crop is in the flowering stage.
โข Harvesting should be during a dry, sunny day, preferably late morning after the dew evaporates
To maintain freshness, package mint leaves in ventilated containers or a breathable bag
โข For bulk storage and transportation, use food-grade build-up crates or bins that allow airflow to prevent moisture buildup and spoilage.
โข Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and humidity during storage to preserve flavor and quality
โข Mint should be stored in a cool, dry place, ideally between 0ยฐC and 4ยฐC, to prolong shelf-life
โ

Ayusip (๐๐ข๐ค๐ค๐ช๐ฏ๐ช๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ฎ๐บ๐ณ๐ต๐ฐ๐ช๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ด (๐๐ญ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฆ) ๐๐ช๐ฒ.) or the Philippine Blueberry naturally grows in areas of high-elevation mossy forest that have high relative humidity, low temperature, and high rainfall. It requires a very acidic, well-drained soil with a pH of 4 to 5.5 for optimum growth, but it can grow broadly within 2.6 to 6.7 pH.
Since it prefers an acidic soil, it can be intercropped with Benguet Pine, with a recommendation of a planting distance of 3 m to 4 m distance from the tree. However, spacing should be farther when it's a bigger pine tree.
It should be remembered that Ayusip can be productive for a century if it is grown from seeds. Thus, it may no longer be productive if the pine tree grows big.
