𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬: 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧

The International Day of Sign Languages is celebrated annually on September 23rd. This day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017 to raise awareness about the importance of sign languages in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf. The date was chosen to commemorate the establishment of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) in 1951.

Each year, the International Day of Sign Languages has a specific theme. The theme for 2024 is 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐮𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬!”. This theme emphasizes the importance of recognizing and promoting the use of sign languages to ensure the linguistic human rights of deaf people (United Nations, n.d.).

Governments, organizations, and communities around the world celebrate this day by organizing events, workshops, and campaigns to promote the use of sign languages. These activities aim to raise awareness about the challenges faced by deaf people and advocate for their rights to access education, information, and services in sign language.

Thus, International Day of Sign Languages is a vital observance that highlights the importance of sign languages in achieving equality and inclusion for deaf people. By promoting and supporting sign languages, we can help ensure that deaf individuals have the same opportunities and rights as everyone else.
