Benguet State University is nestled in the heart of La Trinidad, Benguet. It started as the La Trinidad Farm School with 30 grade V pupils in 1916. The Farm School expanded its services and heightened its prominence in La Trinidad. According to earlier reports, the Farm School was โ€œplanned to develop into a large normal school where the best Igorot pupils will be trained to be teachers among their own people with emphasis on agriculture.โ€

In 1920, the farm school was elevated as the Trinidad Agricultural School with 188 students enrolled in first year high school. Re-opening after the war in 1946, the school became the La Trinidad Agricultural High School. Four years later, a provincial normal curriculum was abolished in 1953 and a two-year post-high school certificate in agricultural education was offered.

The school was renamed La Trinidad National Agricultural School (LTNAS). After four months, it was nationalized and named the Mountain National Agricultural School. (MNAS). It was soon converted into the Mountain National College (MNAC); Mountain Agricultural College (MAC); and eventually, the Mountain State Agricultural College (MSAC) in 1969 through RA 5923.

On January 12, 1986, the college was converted to a state university by virtue of Presidential Decree (PD) No. 2010 signed by President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

At present BSU is awarded SUC Level IV, the highest category in the SUC leveling classification of State Universities and Colleges by the Commission on Higher Education.

Graduating Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCpE) students and faculty members from Ifugao State University (IFSU) โ€“ Potia Campus visited the Benguet State University (BSU) for an educational tour that highlighted innovative agricultural technologies and sustainable farming practices.

The visit provided students with firsthand exposure to advanced agricultural systems and emerging technologies supporting food security and sustainable development. As Computer Engineering students, the group expressed particular interest in smart agriculture, sustainable agriculture, and technology-enabled farming practicesโ€”areas that integrate science, engineering, and innovation in addressing contemporary agricultural challenges.

As part of the educational activity, participants attended a series of discussions facilitated by experts from BSU, featuring technologies and practices in crop production and agricultural innovation.

Participants attended discussions on modern agricultural technologies, including tissue culture and micropropagation, seed potato aeroponics and drip irrigation, and seed yam aeroponics and drip irrigation. The sessions highlighted innovative and technology-driven farming practices that promote sustainable crop production, resource efficiency, agricultural resilience, and the production of high-quality planting materials.

Following the discussions, the IFSU delegation toured various university facilities, allowing participants to observe actual operations and applications of agricultural technologies presented during the sessions. The educational tour enabled students to gain practical insights into how modern agricultural innovations are implemented to support efficient and sustainable farming systems.

Marvin D. Mayormente, Chairperson of the BSCpE Program of Ifugao State University, expressed gratitude to Benguet State University for accommodating the educational tour and emphasized the significance of the learning experience for the students.

โ€œToday, our computer engineering students were given the opportunity to witness firsthand how modern technologies such as tissue culture, micropropagation, and aeroponics are transforming agriculture and contributing to food security and sustainable development. This innovation demonstrates how science, engineering, and technology can be applied to addressing global challenges and improving the lives of our communitiesโ€.

Mayormente also encouraged students to maximize the knowledge gained from the educational tour and apply interdisciplinary approaches in their future careers.

โ€œTo our students, I encourage you to reflect on the knowledge and insights you have gained from this visit. Let this experience inspire you to become innovators, problem solvers, and future professionals who can contribute meaningfully to nation-building through technology and interdisciplinary collaborationโ€.

The visit underscored the growing importance of interdisciplinary learning, where engineering and technological expertise increasingly contribute to agricultural advancement, sustainability, and community development.//WMarcos

Benguet State University (BSU), through the Research and Extension sector, held the 10th University Student Research Congress (USRC) with the theme โ€œPan-aamtaan: Empowering Young Minds Through Science, Technology, Research and Innovation, and Cultural Stewardship.โ€

The activity was held in various halls of the Research and Extension Building, the Northern Philippines Root Crops Research and Training Center, and the Agri-based Technology Business Incubator/Innovation Center. A total of 110 papers were presented under the Science and Technology Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources (S&T AANR), S&T Food, Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technologies (FIEET), Social AANR, Social Non-AANR, and Education categories.

During the first day, VP for Research and Extension Roscinto Ian C. Lumbres welcomed Balik Scientist and keynote speaker Flor Crisanta F. Galvez, University President Kenneth A. Laruan, the panel of evaluators, deans, mentors, advisers, guests, and student researchers. He emphasized that the congress marks a decade of student-led inquiry, homegrown ideas, and BSUโ€™s continuing commitment to research excellence. Lumbres also explained that the theme reflects the gathering, sharing, and learning of knowledge rooted in community, culture, and land.

Moreover, University President Laruan congratulated the student researchers for reaching the USRC and thanked the technical evaluators and Galvez for their support. He compared research to planting trees, explaining that its benefits may not be immediate but can grow into meaningful contributions for future generations. Laruan reminded students that research is built on patience, discipline, and continuous learning, and urged them to use their findings to help solve real-world problems in their communities and workplaces.

In her message, Galvez expressed gratitude to BSU for inviting her to the congress and for its commitment to nurturing research, innovation, and cultural stewardship. She shared that research is not merely an academic requirement but a journey of purpose, discipline, and responsibility. Galvez encouraged the student researchers to pursue work that serves people, respects local knowledge systems, and creates real impact beyond publication and academic recognition.

โ€œTrue excellence is measured by relevance, real-world issues, ethical integrity, respect for communities, and a positive impact your work creates. Research is not just about what we discover, it is about what you would do with that discoveryโ€ she said.

Before the paper presentations, the mechanics and evaluation criteria were presented by College of Numeracy and Applied Sciences Dean Ederson G. Bawang, followed by an introduction to the panel of evaluators. All participant researchers presented their papers simultaneously under the different categories.

On the second day, College of Teacher Education (CTE) Dean Divina M. Yango presented the synthesis during the closing program followed by an inspirational message by VP for Business Affairs Josel M. Florentin. He shared a quote from Paulo Coelhoโ€™s Book, The Alchemist, which goes "When you want something with all your heart, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.โ€ He then congratulated the participants for a job well done and encouraged them to rest and later on, continue the path of research.

โ€œYou may now breathe a sigh of relief. I believe you will never forget the experiences you have learned here. That is the wonder of research. Research is to see what everybody else can't see, I hope that you keep your enthusiasm, as you continue to pursue this journeyโ€ Florentin said.

The awarding ceremony followed Florentinโ€™s message. The winning papers are:
