Benguet State University (BSU) formally opened its Annual In-House Review themed “Pantabtavalan: Cultivating Excellence in Transformative and Innovative RDE” at the Research and Extension Building.

The annual activity brings together BSU researchers, technology generators, stakeholders, and partner agencies to review and evaluate the university’s research and extension initiatives. Among the invited stakeholders are the Provincial Local Government Unit of Benguet, Municipal Agriculture Office of Tublay, Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education–Cordillera Administrative Region, Schools Division Office of Benguet, and Municipal Local Government Unit of Itogon.

The participation of these stakeholders reflects BSU’s efforts to strengthen community engagement and ensure that its research and extension programs remain responsive to the needs and realities of its partner communities.

In his message, BSU President Kenneth Laruan emphasized the university’s commitment to improving the quality and impact of its research outputs. He described research as similar to farming, where a good idea serves as the seed that requires proper soil, nurturing, patience, and hard work before it can grow, bear fruit, and create meaningful impact.

Relating the parable of the seed, he stressed that while good ideas are important, they alone do not guarantee a good harvest. Similarly, research ideas become transformative only when nurtured through systematic inquiry, sound methodology, reliable evidence, accurate data, critical analysis, collaboration, innovation, and responsiveness to community needs.

He challenged researchers to reflect on a fundamental question, “What can change because of our research?”
Serving as keynote speaker, Ruben Paoad shared his experiences and observations on the province's agricultural conditions, drawing on his background as a son of a farmer and his later experience as a public servant.

Paoad highlighted the role of curiosity in developing practical solutions to community concerns, noting that curiosity can develop simple yet revolutionary technology that can effectively address problems faced by communities.

He also emphasized that modernizing agriculture does not necessarily mean imposing additional costs on farmers. Instead, he encouraged stakeholders to maximize the unique climate, environment, and resources available in the locality.

This Annual In-House Review serves as a venue to monitor, review, and evaluate completed and ongoing research and extension projects funded by BSU and external agencies.

A total of 92 papers are set for review under various categories, including Science and Technology Agriculture and Natural Resources (S&T AANR), Science and Technology Fisheries, Forestry, Environment, and related areas (S&T FIEET), Social Agriculture and Natural Resources (SOC AANR), Development, Extension, Social Non-AANR, and Education.

Through the activity, BSU continues to strengthen its culture of research excellence while encouraging researchers to produce knowledge, technologies, and innovations that go beyond academic outputs and contribute to meaningful and transformative changes in communities.// CD De Guzman, N. Sudaypan

Benguet State University (BSU), through its Horticulture Research and Training Institute (HORTI) and Gender and Development (GAD) Office, partnered with the La Trinidad Municipal Agriculture Office to conduct skills training for senior citizens.

The Gender Mainstreaming and Skills Training in Terrarium Making and Dish Gardening for Senior Citizens activity gathered participants from various barangays in the municipality. Beyond teaching horticulture techniques, the activity aimed to promote inclusivity, strengthen community partnerships between BSU and the local government, and help senior citizens manage stress, relax, and address age-related concerns. The products created during the training may also provide potential income-generating opportunities for the participants.

GAD Director Jude L. Tayaben welcomed the participants, followed by a message from La Trinidad Mayor Roderick C. Awingan.

Chief of the BSU Horticulture Ornamental Division Alma A. Amado led the first session, discussing and demonstrating dish gardening techniques, proper plant pairing, and aesthetic arrangement. The training continued in the afternoon with Chief of the Landscaping and Environmental Aesthetics Unit Leila Mary A. Ayban, who delivered lectures and demonstrated techniques for creating miniature glass terrariums. Following the discussions, participants applied what they learned by creating their own dish gardens and terrariums during the hands-on activity.

The event concluded with participants sharing their impressions and a closing message from Municipal Agriculturist Nida D. Organo, who reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to supporting community-level agricultural activities.

The Information, Communications, and Technology Unit (ICTU) team of Apayao State College (ASC), led by ASC President Emmanuel James P. Pattaguan, conducted a benchmarking visit to Benguet State University (BSU), to gain insights into the University's practices in digital transformation and the use of information and communications technology for administrative and educational purposes.

The visit provided an opportunity for the two institutions to exchange experiences on how ICT systems and services support university operations, academic activities, and the delivery of services to stakeholders.

The BSU Information and Communications Technology (ICT) team, led by ICT Director Paul G. Garcia, Jr., facilitated the discussions and shared the University's experiences in managing ICT services and information systems. The discussion included the strengths and challenges encountered by BSU in addressing the University's information and technology needs, providing the ASC delegates with practical insights into ICT management in a higher education setting.

Following the discussions, the ASC-ICTU team toured selected BSU-ICT facilities and observed their operations firsthand. The facility tour was complemented by on-site discussions, allowing the delegates to better understand the systems, equipment, and practices employed by the University in supporting its administrative and academic functions.

The benchmarking activity also served as a venue for the exchange of ideas on possible approaches to strengthening ICT services and addressing emerging technology needs in higher education institutions.

Pattaguan expressed his deepest gratitude to BSU, on behalf of ASC, for accommodating the delegation and sharing the University's experiences and practices in ICT management.

Benguet State University - The Department of Food Technology under the College of Human Ecology (CHE) celebrated a milestone as 21 of its examinees successfully passed the 2026 Food Technologist Licensure Examination (FTLE), marking the department’s first participation in the professional licensure examination.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released the FTLE results on August 17, 2026, following the examination conducted on August 12 and 13. For the Department of Food Technology, the results marked a promising beginning for its first batch of examinees.

While this achievement represents only the beginning of the department’s journey in the licensure examination, the results also demonstrate the determination and preparation of its graduates. The milestone also reflects the collective efforts of the examinees, faculty members, mentors, and the university community who supported them throughout their preparation.

The college also extends its recognition to all those who took the FTLE. Their decision to take on the challenge, along with the hard work and sacrifices they made in preparation for the examination, remains an achievement in itself.

To the newly licensed Professional Food Technologists, the College of Human Ecology expresses our pride and congratulations, encouraging this achievement as a foundation for further professional growth and meaningful contributions to the food industry.

The 21 successful examinees mark a strong first chapter for the Department of Food Technology in the FTLE—a beginning that the department hopes will pave the way for more licensed Food Technologists in the years to come.

The Supply and Property Management Office (SPMO) and Procurement Management Office (PMO) led this week’s flag-raising ceremony.

Following the ceremony, the PMO reminded offices across the university of the urgency of submitting their Project Procurement Management Plan (PPMP) to ensure the timely and proper implementation of planned procurement activities.

Afterwards, Pelin Be**no of the College of Human Ecology (CHE) recognized Rojhon Sawac, a student under the Department of Human Nutrition, for being named as Outstanding Nutrition and Dietetics Student. The recognition was given by the Philippine Association of Nutrition, Inc., honoring Sawac’s excellence and accomplishments in the field.

This was followed by Kathlyn P. Aragon, also of the CHE under the Department of Home Economics, who recognized the 21 successful examinees of the Food Technologists Licensure Examination held on August 12–13, 2026, listing a passing rate of 48.84 percent.

In her closing remarks, VP for Academic Affairs Janet Pablo emphasized sensitivity as a key pillar of resilience, particularly in responding to changing circumstances within the university.

Pablo stressed the importance of properly understanding the university’s biophysical environment and considering the capabilities of employees and clients when implementing alternative work arrangements. She likewise highlighted the need to consider the capabilities and available resources of students in the implementation of asynchronous arrangements.

“We should cope up, we should be able to adapt, be adapted and be transformed,” Pablo said, emphasizing the importance of remaining connected and reachable despite changes in work and learning arrangements.

The University advises the public that not all such solicitations are authorized or sanctioned by BSU or the Office of the University President. Any use of the name of Benguet State University, its official letterhead, logo, or the name, signature, or purported signature of the University President without proper authority is strictly prohibited.

Individuals, organizations, businesses, and other concerned parties are therefore advised not to provide money, sponsorship, donations, or any form of contribution solely on the basis of such letters or communications without first verifying their authenticity with the University.

Anyone who receives a solicitation purportedly coming from BSU or the Office of the University President is requested to coordinate directly with the University through its official communication channels before acting on the request.

BSU likewise warns any person against unauthorized solicitation or the unauthorized use, reproduction, or representation of the University President's name, signature, office, or the University's official identity for purposes of obtaining money, donations, sponsorships, or other benefits.

The University reserves the right to take appropriate administrative, civil, and/or criminal action, as may be warranted, against any person found responsible for such unauthorized acts.
