A Teacherโ€™s Journey Home through SPIMS

BAGUIO CITY, June 16 โ€” Returning overseas Filipino worker (OFW) teacher Hardy A. Paran shared his inspiring journey of resilience, reintegration, and service during the Bayanihan para sa Balikbayang Manggagawa National Reintegration Network and Job Fair held at the Baguio Convention Center on June 16, 2026.

A graduate of Mathematics Education from Benguet State University, Paran worked as a teacher in Thailand for four years after finding limited opportunities in the Philippines. While abroad, he gained valuable teaching experience and professional growth, but family circumstances and a desire to serve his fellow Filipinos eventually led him back home.

Through the Department of Migrant Workers' Sa 'Pinas, Ikaw ang Ma'am/Sir (SPIMS) Program, Paran was deployed to Alno National High School in La Trinidad, Benguet, where he embraced the challenges of public-school teaching and successfully reintegrated into the Philippine education system.

Since returning, he has earned a Master's Degree in Mathematics with Best Thesis Award, was promoted to Teacher III, received recognition as Best Mathematics Teacher in his division, and is currently pursuing a doctorate degree.

Paran expressed his gratitude to the Department of Migrant Workers, the National Reintegration Center for OFWs, and the Department of Education for providing returning OFW educators an opportunity to continue their passion for teaching in their homeland.

His story reflects the impact of the SPIMS Program in empowering returning migrant workers to transform their global experiences into meaningful contributions to Filipino learners and communities.

Wangal, La Trinidad, Benguet - June 18, 2026|| Demonstrating that disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility, personnel of the Department of Education-Cordillera Administrative Region (DepEd-CAR) Regional Office actively participated in the National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) this morning, reaffirming the agency's commitment to fostering a resilient, responsive, and disaster-ready workforce.

As the earthquake simulation commenced, employees promptly executed the prescribed safety procedures, including the "Duck, Cover, and Hold" protocol, before proceeding in an orderly manner to the designated assembly area at the open space in front of the Regional Office main building.

The activity served as an opportunity to assess the office's emergency response mechanisms and reinforce the importance of readiness in the face of natural hazards. It also highlighted the vital role of regular drills in ensuring that personnel are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively during actual emergencies.

As one of the country's most disaster-prone regions, the Agency continues to prioritize preparedness and resilience. Simultaneous earthquake drills were likewise conducted in Schools Division Offices and public schools across CAR, engaging learners, teachers, school leaders, and personnel in a collective effort to strengthen disaster awareness and response capabilities.

The synchronized participation of DepEd-CAR schools and offices highlighted a simple but powerful message: preparedness is everyone's responsibility, and readiness begins long before an emergency strikes.

๐๐š๐ ๐ฎ๐ข๐จ ๐‚๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ|| Behind every Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) is a story of sacrifice, resilience, and hope. For one former OFW teacher from La Trinidad, Benguet, that story came full circle through the Sa Pinas, Ikaw ang Ma'am at Sir (SPIMS) Program, allowing her to return home and fulfill her lifelong dream of serving Filipino learners.

During the Bayanihan para sa Balikbayang Manggagawa National Reintegration Network (BBM-NRN) and Job Fair led by the Department of Migrant Workers-Cordillera Administrative Region (DMW-CAR) last June 16, 2026, at the Baguio City Convention Center, teacher Glaiza Rose T. Agwilang shared her inspiring testimony before fellow OFWs, government officials, and partners. Her story served as a powerful reminder that reintegration is not merely about returning home- it is about rebuilding lives, reuniting families, and rediscovering one's purpose.

Years before becoming a public-school teacher, she faced the same struggles experienced by many aspiring educators. Despite earning her teaching license, limited opportunities and the realities of supporting her family compelled her to seek employment outside the country. She worked various jobs before taking a leap of faith and traveling to Thailand, where she eventually established a successful teaching career.

For seven years, she taught in Bangkok, earning the respect of colleagues and students while becoming an active member of the Filipino community abroad. Yet behind the professional success were the silent sacrifices familiar to many OFWs - the loneliness of being far from loved ones, missing family milestones, and enduring life's challenges away from home.

When the time came to return to the Philippines and start a family with her husband, uncertainty loomed. The prospect of leaving a stable career abroad for an uncertain future back home was daunting. However, fate led her to discover the SPIMS Program, a government initiative designed to help qualified OFW teachers transition into the Philippine public school system.

Through the program, her years of teaching experience abroad were recognized and valued. The support and guidance she received throughout the process opened a new chapter in her life. In January 2017, she officially entered the gates of La Trinidad National High School, Benguet - not as an applicant, but as a newly hired Teacher 1.

Looking back, she described the opportunity as life-changing.

Today, she serves as a Teacher VI through the Expanded Career Progression (ECP), turning years of hard work, perseverance, and continuous learning into a remarkable career milestone. As she continues to shape young minds and inspire future generations, her story stands as a powerful reminder that opportunities created through government support can help returning OFWs rebuild their dreams, excel in their chosen profession, and make a lasting impact on nation-building.

The SPIMS Program, led by the DMW and in partnership with DepEd, has provided opportunities for former OFW teachers to continue their teaching careers in the country, bringing home not only their skills and experiences but also their passion for shaping the future of Filipino children.

As the nation continues to honor the contributions of overseas Filipino workers, stories like hers embody the true spirit of reintegration - bringing teachers home, reuniting families, and building the nation one learner at a time.

"The Philippines needs you. Our Filipino learners need your worldly perspective, your courage, and your heart," Teacher Glaiza said in her message to fellow OFW teachers.

Through SPIMS, what was once a distant dream became a reality - a journey home that transformed sacrifice into service and hope into purpose.

The Department of Education-Cordillera Administrative Region (DepEd-CAR) actively participated in the Bayanihan para sa Balikbayang Manggagawa-National Reintegration Network and Job Fair, highlighting the '๐™Ž๐™– ๐™‹๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™–๐™จ, ๐™„๐™ ๐™–๐™ฌ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ˆ๐™–'๐™–๐™ข ๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™Ž๐™ž๐™ง' (SPIMS) Program's role in turning returning Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) into educators and nation-builders.

Organized by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) in partnership with various government agencies and private companies, the event brought together stakeholders providing employment opportunities, reintegration services, and support programs for returning OFWs.

Joining the activity were more than 20 SPIMS beneficiaries in the Cordillera region who were recently appointed as permanent teachers. The beneficiaries were each awarded P20,000 allowance, providing additional support as they begin their careers in the public education system.

During the program, DepEd-CAR Human Resource Unit Head Maricel Codimdim discussed the Special Hiring Process and emphasized that SPIMS applicants are ranked under a separate Registry of Qualified Applicants (RQA), distinct from the regular teacher hiring process.

During the Kumustahan session, SPIMS beneficiaries Glaiza Rose T. Agwilang, Teacher VI of La Trinidad National High School, and Hardy A. Paran, Teacher III of Alno National High School, shared their inspiring journeys from working abroad to building meaningful careers in their respective hometown as public school teachers. They stressed that this provided them brighter career path they never imagined would become possible. Their stories highlighted how the program has transformed the lives of returning OFWs by opening doors to stable and fulfilling employment in the education sector.

The job fair also featured local and international employment opportunities offered by private companies, while partner government agencies provided various services and assistance to more than a thousand walk-in clients.
