Among the Kankanaey-Bago ethnolinguisitic group, their calendar, which is based on the lunar months, is known as MATAON. The period from the Fourth week of April to third week of May is known as KIANG.
β¨At this point, the daytime is longer and local folk believe that for every kiang or pace they make while traveling to their farms, they get hungry. This is considered a lean season because by now the indigenous folk has used up all their rice stock. They thus have to hunt for food or seek jobs elsewhere.

The Watwat Club: Benguet NHS , together with the Benguet NHS SSLG and Debate Society Club, along with teachers from the Social Sciences Department, Sir Ros Jansel Gualdo, Maβam Maricar Delmas, Maβam Delilah Depnag, and Maβam Jacqueline Tomey, would like to express their sincere gratitude for the invitation to this meaningful event.
It was a day full of life, where cultures from Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, and Mountain Province were shared through songs, dances, and local dishes prepared by the students. Each group showcased a part of their roots, reminding everyone how rich and vibrant Cordilleran traditions are. The Indigenous games in the afternoon made the day even more enjoyable, bringing people closer through simple yet joyful moments.
This event is part of the core subject Cordillera 101, whose objective is the understanding and appreciation of oneβs history, identity, and culture through song and dance performances. As highlighted in the opening speeches, Dr. Stanley Anongos Jr., Dean of the College of Social Sciences, emphasized that much of our culture is learned and appreciated through school activities where teachers serve as modern-day elders and cultural bearers.
Dr. Rex John Bawang, Head of BSU International Relations, also emphasized the commonalities among cultures not only among Cordillerans and Filipinos but also among various peoples around the world.
Benguet National High School, through the WATWAT Club, has been fortunate to witness and participate in such colorful and meaningful celebrations. This marks the fifth time that teachers and learners from Benguet NHS have joined this regular cultural exchange. We are grateful to be part of this gathering that celebrates identity, unity, and culture.

Among the Kankanaey-Bago ethnolinguisitic group, their calendar, which is based on the lunar months, is known as MATAON. The period from the Fourth week of March to Third week of April is known as KETKETI.
β¨This period is almost dry with only isolated rains. Farmers start burning the reeds and grasses they cleared for their swidden farms, which they cultivate when the rain comes.

On March 20, 2026, the IYAMAN Party brought together seven Social Sciences clubs: DebSoc, BKD, SALIDA, CAT, SSLG, FHL-PUSH, and WATWAT for a powerful day of gratitude and reflection. The program opened with a spiritual message from the FHL-PUSH Club, who emphasized that love is a divine action rather than just a feeling.
The atmosphere turned emotional during the presentation of accomplishments, as many leaders were moved to tears and joy seeing how they overcame impossible challenges.
To guide their future path, Ma'am Maricar Delmas, the SSLG Adviser issued the SOC-SCI Challenge, urging leaders to focus on their πhared Leadership, πrganized Engagement, and πΎommunity Impact, while maintaining πupport, πΎollaboration, and πnclusivity. This challenge serves as a reminder of the high standards expected of student leaders moving forward.
A deep sense of gratitude was extended to the school administration, led by Principal Nestor O. Dalay-on, Ph.D., as well as Sir Adam Bahingawan, the PTA President, and the dedicated club advisers. Their unwavering support and encouraging words provided the strength needed to face various obstacles. The event also honored alumni who returned to share their leadership experiences.
The success of the day was a true testament to the spirit of Binnadang. From the teachers and officers who woke up early to prepare food and decorations to those who stayed late for the cleanup, everyone demonstrated that true leadership is rooted in service. With thanks to the Almighty God, the IYAMAN Party concluded as a beautiful celebration of unity and the collective strength of the Social Sciences community.

Among the Kankanaey-Bago ethnolinguisitic group, their calendar, which is based on the lunar months, is known as MATAON. The period from the Last week of February until Last week of March is known as OPOK.
β¨Warm air intensifies, and farmers start clearing swidden farms they had left fallow for some time. Cleared reeds and grasses are left to dry for burning. With the dry season, local folk also stock firewood and repair their houses in time for the rainy season.
