The activity gathered 25 barangay officials, barangay peacekeepers, barangay health workers, and other barangay functionaries.

Aimed at equipping participants with essential skills in administrative and technical report writing, effective photo documentation, and critical media literacy to promote transparency and improve public communication, the one-day activity featured three learning sessions.

The first session, Documentation Report Writing, was facilitated by Ms. Bernice B. Bulalin from the Department of Information Technology (DIT). She emphasized the importance of proper report structure and format, developing clear and relevant content, and adhering to report-writing ethics and guidelines.

The second session, Basic Mobile Photography, was conducted by Ms. Michelle B. Gatab-Laruan from the Department of Development Communication (DDC). She highlighted the importance of safeguarding the dignity of photo subjects and complying with the Data Privacy Act of 2012 by obtaining informed consent. She also discussed camera shots, angles, and basic photography techniques. Her presentation concluded by emphasizing the importance of writing informative captions to provide context and meaning to photographs.

The final session, Combating False Information, was delivered by Ms. Diane D. Bumatang from the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS). She underscored the vital role of barangay officials as community frontliners and trusted sources of information, emphasizing that they should verify information through credible and reliable sources and always practice fact-checking before sharing any information.

The College of Information Sciences continues to affirm its commitment to giving back to the community through the provision of needs-based extension programs aligned with the University's Extension Agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The College of Information Sciences (CIS) welcomed its incoming freshmen during its General Assembly and Freshmen Orientation held on July 22, 2026, at the university gymnasium.

The event brought together freshmen, continuing students, faculty members, college officials, and student leaders for a day of learning and community building.

The freshmen were officially welcomed through the welcome remarks before the introduction of the college officials, administrative staff, department chairs, and other key personnel. The department chairs also presented the college's academic programsโ€”Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS), Bachelor of Science in Development Communication (BSDC), and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT).

Then, Dr. Elizabeth A. Lascano, Dean of the College, delivered a keynote message encouraging students to pursue academic excellence and actively participate in college activities. Bernice B. Bulalin, College Secretary, discussed the college's Vision and Mission as well as the academic policies and expectations to guide students throughout their academic journey.

The second part of the program focused on the Gender and Development (GAD) Orientation, led by Dr. Lascano. She highlighted gender equality and equity, as well as gender and s*x roles. She also emphasized respect within the university community. She concluded with the statement, "Be the change of what you like to be. Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success."

This was followed by the Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Orientation conducted by the Pollution Control Officer, Kevin P. Titiwa, which emphasized environmental responsibility and sustainable practices on campus. "Sustainability doesn't need heroic effort. It gets easier when good choices become habits. Think about how a habit starts. First, something reminds you to do itโ€”like seeing a flat piece of plastic on the ground or in the street. Then, you take action: you pick up the plastic and put it in a trash can. Finally, you get a small reward, a feeling of satisfaction or accomplishment. And because you've done it so many times, it's just what you do. You have built a habit," he emphasized.

The final part of the event featured the CIS Student Government General Assembly. Outgoing Recognized Student Organization (RSO) officers and advisers were recognized for their service and accomplishments through the awarding of certificates. Newly appointed advisers and incoming student government officers were then introduced and officially installed through a turnover ceremony and oath-taking. The recognized student organizationsโ€”Body of Young Technologists (BYTE), Development Communication Society (DCS), Library Information Science Association (LISA), and The Hyperlinkโ€”were also introduced to encourage freshmen to actively participate in campus organizations.

Additionally, the CIS Student Government presented its Constitution and By-Laws, followed by the discussion of proposed amendments and ratification. Students were also oriented on membership contributions, including the membership fee, its purpose, transparency measures, accountability, informed consent, and the collection process. The student government's action plan and upcoming activities were then presented. An open forum allowed students to ask questions and clarify concerns before the event concluded with closing remarks from the CIS Student Government Co-Adviser and a closing prayer.

As the new academic year begins, the orientation reaffirmed the college's commitment to empowering students with the knowledge, guidance, values, and opportunities they need to thrive both academically and personally.

The congress brought together ten research presenters, nine undergraduate and one graduate, representing the College's four degree programs: Information Technology, Library and Information Science, and Development Communication at the undergraduate level, and Master of Library and Information Science at the graduate level.

As a college that bridges multiple dimensions of information, CIS recognizes the unique challenge of fostering a research culture across disciplines with genuinely different approaches whether their work involves lines of code, archival materials, or community narratives.

Bringing these programs under one congress calls for an approach that respects the distinct character of each discipline while upholding a shared commitment to rigorous and meaningful research.

The research presentations were assessed by a distinguished panel of evaluators from across the university:
โ€ข Prof. Kara S. Panolong โ€“ College of Arts and Humanities
โ€ข Mr. Noel L. Cabfilan โ€“ University Library and Information Services
โ€ข Dr. Paul G. Garcia Jr. โ€“ University Information and Communication Technologies Office

The College extends its congratulations to all ten research presenters for their hard work, dedication, and passion for research. The College likewise expresses its gratitude to the panel of evaluators for their time, expertise, and thoughtful guidance throughout the congress. Participants who placed among the top presenters will advance to represent the College at the University Student Research Congress.
