Today, we celebrate Josefa Llanes Escoda, a true hero whose legacy of courage, compassion, and leadership continues to inspire us all. As the founder of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines and a fierce advocate for women's rights, she dedicated her life to empowering the youth, serving the community, and fighting for women's suffrage.
On Escoda Day, we honor her unwavering spirit and patriotism, remembering her sacrifices during World War II and the impact she made on generations of Filipinos. Let us carry forward her mission by living lives of service, kindness, and resilience. ๐

โข Inspired by the Girl Scout movement in the United States, Escoda returned to the Philippines with a mission to establish a similar organization for Filipino girls.
โข She underwent intensive training in girl scouting in the USA, sponsored by the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, before returning to her homeland.
โข Escoda trained young women to become Girl Scout leaders, laying the foundation for the organization's structure and leadership.
โข On May 26, 1940, President Manuel L. Quezon signed the charter of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines, making it officially recognized.
โข Escoda served as the first National Executive of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines, guiding the organization's early development and fostering its growth.

โข Early Advocacy: Escoda was a strong advocate for women's rights as she actively campaigned for women's suffrage, which was finally granted in the Philippines in 1937.
โข Beyond the Classroom: While Escoda is known for her work with the Girl Scouts, she also worked for the Philippine chapter of the American Red Cross and earned a master's degree in sociology from Columbia University.
โข International Recognition: Escoda represented our country at international conferences and speaking engagements, promoting Filipino culture and advocating for peace.
โข The Power of Dress: She often wore traditional Filipiniana dresses during her international speaking engagements, showcasing the beauty and grace of her heritage.

โข The War Years: During World War II, Escoda and her husband, Antonio Escoda, were actively involved in the resistance movement. They risked their lives to provide food, clothing, and medicine to prisoners of war and stranded civilians.
โข Uncertain Fate: Escoda's exact date and location of death remain unknown. She was arrested by the Japanese in 1944 and was last seen alive on January 6, 1945. It is believed that she was executed and buried in an unmarked grave.

โข Featured on the 1000 Peso Note: Escoda's legacy is also honored through her appearance on the Philippine 1000 peso note. She is depicted alongside Josรฉ Abad Santos and Vicente Lim, other Filipino heroes who resisted the Japanese occupation.
โข Boys Town Manila: Escoda was involved in the founding of Boys Town Manila, an organization dedicated to helping underprivileged youth.
