June 8, 2026 was meant to be the first day of classes in all public schools. At 7:00 AM, students and teachers of Mariano Villegas Elementary School, along with schools across the country, stood for the flag ceremony. Minutes after the flag ceremony, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck.
The timing, the tradition of honoring the Philippine flag, placed everyone in a safer space when the ground shook.
Classes were immediately suspended, but the work of education did not stop. Teachers convened online to ensure learning continuity.
Despite lingering fear and uncertainty, June 15, 2026 marked the school’s first day of classes — a quiet act of courage and commitment.
MVES commenced with the OPENING BLOCK — Mental Health and Psychosocial Activities, Socio-emotional Learning & Well-being Checks, Language Mapping, and Rapid Mathematics Assessment — to help learners heal, reconnect, and move forward.
Natural disasters can disrupt schedules, but not the commitment to education. As long as schools, families, and communities stand together, learning continues.
