Bakit may LIQUEFACTION?
1. May malakas na lindol.
2. Umaalog nang matindi ang lupa.
Saan Madalas Mangyari?
* Mga baybaying lugar
* Reclaimed areas
* Pampang ng ilog
* Mga lugar na may maluwag at basang buhangin
Mahalaga Ito Dahil?

Bakit Mahalaga Ito?
1.Nakaaapekto sa pangingisda at coral reef ecosystems
2. Maaaring magbago ang ruta ng mga bangka

The Cotabato Trench is a deep ocean trench located off the southwestern coast of Mindanao, in the southern Philippines. It is a major tectonic boundary where part of the Sunda Plate is being forced beneath the Philippine Mobile Belt through a process called subduction.
🎯Key fact:
Location: Offshore southwest Mindanao, near the Moro Gulf and Celebes Sea.
Type: Oceanic subduction trench.
Tectonic activity: One of the Philippines' most active earthquake-generating zones.
Hazard: Capable of producing large earthquakes and tsunamis that can affect Mindanao and nearby regions.
🎯Notable earthquakes
The trench has generated several major earthquakes:
1918 Celebes Sea earthquake (magnitude ~8.3)
1976 Moro Gulf earthquake (magnitude ~8.0), which triggered a devastating tsunami and caused about 4,000 deaths
2002 Mindanao earthquake (magnitude ~7.5)
🎯Recent relevance
On June 8, 2026, a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred near General Santos and was attributed to movement along the Cotabato Trench. The quake generated tsunami waves and prompted warnings in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
🎯Why it matters
The Cotabato Trench is considered one of the Philippines' most significant tsunami sources. Scientists monitor it closely because future large earthquakes could produce tsunami run-ups of several meters along parts of Mindanao's coast.
In simple terms, the Cotabato Trench is an underwater fault zone south of Mindanao where tectonic plates collide, making it a major source of earthquakes and tsunami hazards in the southern Philippines.
