The ALP Club is grateful for the successful exhibit we held last Friday, March 27. Thank you to everyone who made the day possible and to all the kids who joined us to explore the world of cells๐Ÿƒโœจ

During the exhibit, we introduced what a cell is and why it is called the building block of life๐Ÿงฌ. We discussed the differences between eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic cells using simple examples and diagrams. The kids compared different eukaryotic cells under the microscope. We showed human blood cells ๐Ÿฉธ, plant cells๐Ÿชด, fish cells๐ŸŸ, and bird cells๐Ÿฆ so they could see how cells differ in shape and structure. They spotted the cell wall in plant cells and the nucleus in animal cells.

We also went over parts of the microscope๐Ÿ”ฌand how to use them safely. The kids learned to identify the eyepiece, objective lenses, stage, and focus k***s before trying it themselves.

A heartfelt thank you to our ALP members who managed the microscope stations and guided each activity with patience. We appreciate the teachers, parents, and school staff who supported us and encouraged the students to participate๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’ž

We cannot wait to learn with you again at the next event๐Ÿซถ

The Emerald Dove is a medium-sized pigeon native to the tropical and subtropical parts of South and Southeast Asia. It is typically found in tropical forests and other similar areas such as dense wet woodlands, farms, and mangroves. The doves are usually found by themselves, in pairs, or in small groups. These birds are generally ground dwellers, foraging for fallen fruit, and spend little time in trees except when roosting. They mainly eat seeds and fruits from many different plant species and are generally tame and approachable. When they fly, it is fast and direct, often flying low between patches of dense forest (iNaturalist, n.d.).

The ๐‰๐š๐ฏ๐š ๐’๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ is a small granivorous bird native to Java and Bali. According to Nature Style (2024), it primarily feeds on seeds and grains, especially rice, which explains its frequent presence in farmlands and grasslands. The species is highly social and forms large flocks outside the breeding season (Birda Species Guide, 2024). As reported by Birda Species Guide (2024), Java Sparrows build nests in trees or building crevices using dry grasses, usually laying between 4 and 7 eggs. Although common in captivity, wild populations have declined significantly due to trapping and habitat loss, making the species globally threatened (Birda Species Guide, 2024).

The Long-tailed Shrike is a medium-sized predatory songbird found in open areas, grasslands and agricultural landscapes across Asia. It is well known for its hunting method in which it perches quietly before swooping down on prey such as insects, lizards and small mammals (Wildlife Vagabond, 2024). One of its most documented behaviors is impaling prey on thorns or barbed wire, a strategy that helps the bird store food and tear it apart more easily (Bird Ecology Study Group, 2010). The species builds cup-shaped nests out of grasses and twigs, typically laying 3 to 6 eggs per breeding attempt (Wildlife Vagabond, 2024). It adapts well to human-modified areas, which contributes to its current โ€œLeast Concernโ€ conservation status (BirdLife International, 2024).

Although mostly insectivorous, shrikes consume more lizards and small vertebrates during the dry season when insects are scarcer (BirdLife International, 2024).
