National Competency in Weaving to be Held in the Land of the Dreamweavers

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges, Inc. (RMMC) Cultural Development Center, will conduct the first-ever capability building program for Backstrap Weaving NC II.

The Capacity Building Program for Regional Lead Assessors (CBP-RLA) aims to strengthen the appreciation and preservation of traditional weaving practices in the country while ensuring their continuity through formal training and certification.

Weavers from the Cordillera Administrative Region, Davao del Sur, and Visayas will gather in the Land of the Dreamweavers for four days to develop the Competency Assessment Tools for Backstrap Weaving NC II, which will be used nationwide.

TESDA Deputy Director General Nelly Nita Dillera, former DOT-12 Regional Director, encouraged Dreamweavers in the region to take part in the activity.

“Join the Capability Building Program for Backstrap Weaving NC II in my home region, SOX,” DDG Dillera posted on her official Facebook account.

The program will showcase and integrate different traditional weaving methods, such as the Binodbodan of the Cordillera, the T’nalak of the T’boli in South Cotabato, the Tabih of the Blaan in Matanao and Polomolok, the Tennun of the Yakans in Basilan, and the Binalodan of the Mëranaw in Lanao (BARMM). These weaving traditions will be studied and harmonized toward a common framework and perspective for weaving in the Philippines.

Through the awarding of the National Certificate (NC II), weavers can be professionalized and standardized, giving recognition to their skills while helping ensure the continuity of weaving culture across different regions.

The four-day CBP-RLA for Backstrap Weaving NC II will be held on September 2–5, 2025 at the RMMC Mindanao Ikat Studies Center and Museum, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.
