The new school year at Mary Land School, Inc. (MLSI) opened with more than just welcome greetings—it opened with readiness. This year’s student orientation was designed not only to prepare learners academically but also to equip them for the unexpected.
Given the recent 7.8‑magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao last June 8, 2026, safety has become an even sharper priority. That’s why, as part of MLSI’s commitment to student protection, the orientation program included an earthquake drill orientation and simulation. While this drill is usually done every quarter, MLSI made sure students were prepared right at the start of the school year.
Students in Grades 1 to 5 gathered at the covered area, where the school principal led the presentation. For Grades 6 to 10, their advisers took the lead inside their respective classrooms. During the orientation, students learned key facts about earthquakes, essential safety measures, and the specific DOs and DON’Ts during and after a tremor. They also learned where to go once evacuation starts—and how to keep themselves and others safe.
After the discussion, a simulation was conducted so students could immediately apply what they learned. It was a chance to see if they could act the right way during and after an earthquake. And they did well.
We are hoping and praying for a safe learning experience this School Year without fear and worries for students and teachers.
