ASASHS Strengthens Health, Safety, and Child Protection Through HLI Capacity-Building

School Head, faculty & staff, Health-Promoting School (HLI) coordinators, and education stakeholders gathered for a comprehensive orientation and capacity-building activity aimed at strengthening school health, safety, and child protection initiatives. The program, which commenced at 1:47 PM with an opening prayer led by the Rural Health Unit (RHU) personnel, featured a series of expert-led discussions designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to foster healthier, safer, and more resilient learning environments.

The activity opened with an orientation on the Health-Promoting School (HLI) program, focusing on the salient provisions of Pillar 4 and showcasing the achievements of schools that successfully met the HLI qualification standards. Participants also received guidance on the proper preparation of the required Means of Verification (MOVs) to ensure compliance with HLI indicators. The discussion was followed by an informative lecture on bullying prevention delivered by PCPT Jezzyl D. Simon of the Philippine National Police. The session covered the definition of bullying, the distinction between bullying and normal conflict, relevant Philippine laws and policies, the roles of parents, reporting procedures, and available support mechanisms for victims, while encouraging schools to uphold safe and inclusive learning spaces.

Health promotion remained at the forefront of the activity as Jessica M. Dumanig, RM discussed the importance of breastfeeding, highlighting the provisions of Republic Act No. 10028 and Executive Order No. 11, which advocate for breastfeeding and strengthen maternal-child health. Meanwhile, personnel from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) conducted a practical session on Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid, emphasizing life-saving techniques such as proper response to bleeding emergencies and the correct administration of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to help prevent brain damage during emergencies.

Participants also gained valuable insights into Food Handling and Safety through a lecture by Marites Digal, RN, who emphasized proper sanitation practices, safe food preparation, appropriate food storage, and the importance of using clean water and quality raw materials to prevent food-borne illnesses. In another session, Mae T. Ravidaz, RMT, MD discussed Brief To***co Cessation Interventions, Mental Health, and the Preventive Drug Education Program (PDEP), underscoring the need to promote healthy lifestyles and safeguard the well-being of learners and school personnel.

To conclude the series of lectures, Metchie O. Laurejas, RN revisited the Health-Promoting School (HLI) Checklist, clarifying the corresponding points assigned to each Means of Verification under every HLI pillar and addressing participantsโ€™ concerns regarding documentation and compliance. The activity concluded with a closing prayer at 4:30 PM, reaffirming the participantsโ€™ commitment to strengthening school health programs, promoting child protection, enhancing disaster preparedness, and ensuring that schools remain safe, healthy, and nurturing environments for every learner.
