When I first looked into becoming a Virtual Assistant, I almost backed out. My first thought was, “I don’t have any VA experience, who’s going to hire me?”

But then I realized… most of the things VAs do were things I was already doing. Scheduling, answering emails, researching, creating content, even organizing files. I just never called it “VA work.”

Here’s how I turned that mindset around, and how you can too if you’re starting from zero:

1️⃣ 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲. (Think: organizing, communication, research, content creation.)
2️⃣ 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗩𝗔 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀. You’ll notice a lot overlaps.
3️⃣ 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻. Canva, Google Workspace, Trello, Asana, don’t overwhelm yourself.
𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Instead of “I don’t have VA experience,” say “I can handle scheduling, content, and admin tasks, and I’m quick to learn new tools.”
5️⃣ 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲, even volunteer or freelance projects count.

The truth is: no one really starts with “VA experience.” We all start by using what we already know and building from there.

So if you’re thinking of becoming a VA, don’t get stuck on the idea of not having experience. You already have more than you think, you just need to frame it right.

🚨 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗳 𝗮 “𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁” 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗺 🚨

Sadly, not every VA job you see online is real. Some people take advantage of beginners who are just eager to land their first client. Here are red flags to watch out for:

🔴 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘂𝗽𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁.
Legit clients pay you, not the other way around. If they ask for a “registration fee” or “software fee,” run.

🔴 𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀.
If a job says “Earn $500 a day with no skills required,” it’s 99% fake.

🔴 𝗩𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
Real clients will list specific tasks (ex: email management, social media, admin). Scammers stay vague.

🔴 𝗨𝗻𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Messages full of grammar errors, or if they push you to move to WhatsApp/Telegram immediately, be cautious.

🔴 𝗡𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲.
Search the client’s name, company, or email. If nothing shows up, that’s a red flag.

🔴 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂.
Scammers pressure you to say yes quickly before you can think or research.

✅ 𝗧𝗶𝗽: Always research before saying yes. Ask for a proper contract, and never share personal IDs or bank details until you’re sure the client is legit.
