When I designed my house, I never intended for everyone to find it beautiful. I designed it for myself and my wife because we're the ones who live here.
I didn't want a house that would need repainting every other year. I didn't want it to look like my neighbor's house. I didn't want people admiring it so much that it would attract unwanted attention, or even thieves.
What I wanted was a home that feels safe. A home I'd always look forward to coming back to. A home that looks and feels right to me.
I also wanted it to feel alive. Like it's growing old alongside me. Breathing. Developing wrinkles with time. Hehe. The Japanese call this wabi-sabi: finding beauty in age, imperfection, and the passage of time.
Whenever people pass by, they often stop and look at my house. They seem confused.
"Is that really a house?"
"Is it beautiful?"
"Why is it so different?"
I honestly don't care.
Because to me, my house is an extension of who I am.
