The School of Engineering, Computer Studies, and Architecture (SECSA) has long been at the forefront of academic and research excellence, thanks to the dedicated work of its faculty members. From pioneering advancements in material science to developing cutting-edge technologies in engineering and computer science, SECSA faculty have consistently demonstrated their commitment to innovation and academic progress. Here, we spotlight the impressive contributions of SECSA’s Dean Nolan E. Fernandez, Program Head David Mark M. Mueller, and other faculty members of SECSA.

𝗡𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗘. 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘇: 𝗔 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Nolan E. Fernandez, RME, M.Eng, the esteemed Dean of SECSA, has been a driving force behind groundbreaking research in material science and engineering. Fernandez co-authored the study “Characterization of Impact, Bending, and Water Absorption Properties of Coir Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (CFRC) Fiberboard.” This pioneering work, published in the Philippine Journal of Engineering Education and Technology (PJEET), explored the potential of using natural materials like coir fibers to enhance concrete, making it more sustainable and environmentally friendly. This work was presented at the International Conference on Engineering Education in Iloilo City, drawing international attention and recognition.

In addition to his work on material science, Fernandez also showcased his skills in the realm of technological innovation. At the 28th Annual Conference of the Philippine Society for Engineering Research and Education (PSERE), he presented his project titled “Design and Development of Laser-Assisted Linear Displacement Instrument with Arduino as Means for Data Acquisition.” This project leverages the power of laser technology and Arduino systems to create an accurate, efficient, and cost-effective tool for precise data acquisition, reflecting his continuous commitment to advancing engineering applications.

𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗠. 𝗠𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿: 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆

David Mark M. Mueller, REE., M.Eng., the SECSA Program Head, has made significant contributions to engineering, particularly in the areas of neural networks and theoretical physics. One of his key works, “Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity in a Nutshell,” was published by the John 14:14 Book Publishing Center in Manila. This publication aimed to simplify and make Einstein's groundbreaking theories accessible to a wider audience, offering a fresh perspective on one of physics’ most complex ideas.

Mueller’s technical contributions also extend to the field of machine learning. His work “Impact of Neuron Count and Learning Rate on the Accuracy of a Numpy-based Artificial Neural Networks in Predictive Modelling of Non-Linear Dynamical Systems” was presented at the Visayan Journal of Science Technology and Innovation (VJSTI) conference in Mandurriao, Iloilo City. This study delves into the intricacies of artificial neural networks and their application in predictive modeling, exploring how adjustments to neural network parameters can significantly impact their performance in forecasting complex, non-linear systems.

Further cementing his reputation as a forward-thinking researcher, Mueller also presented his “Design and Development of Laser-Assisted Linear Displacement Instrument with Arduino as Means for Data Acquisition” at the 28th PSERE Conference. This project reflects his expertise in combining emerging technologies like lasers and microcontroller platforms to improve data collection methods in engineering.

𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗷𝗼𝘃 𝗣. 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗼: 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Loriejov P. Andico is another standout faculty member whose contributions span both engineering research and education. Andico co-authored the study “The Influence of Fiber Density and Cellulose Content of Banana and Rice Straw Fibers on Fiber Processing and Flexural Strength.” Publised in the International Research Journal on Innovations in Engineering, Science, and Technology, this work explored the properties of agricultural fibers as sustainable alternatives for reinforcing materials, a critical step towards eco-friendly building materials. The research was shared at the Batangas State University, highlighting the potential of local agricultural waste in the production of stronger, more resilient materials.

At the 6th ACUNO Multidisciplinary Research Conference, Andico presented “A Conduit of Knowledge through Virtual Laboratory,” emphasizing the importance of virtual learning tools in engineering education. This work provided innovative solutions for conducting experiments and simulations online, making engineering knowledge more accessible to students across various disciplines. Andico also collaborated with Daniel A. Tagulagao, Jr. on the “RFID-Based Student Information System,” presented at the 28th PSERE Conference. This project, which leverages radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, aimed to streamline student information management, furthering the use of technology in enhancing academic systems.

𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗔. 𝗧𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗰, 𝗝𝗿.: 𝗣𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗙𝗜𝗗 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Daniel A. Tagulagao, Jr. is known for his collaborative work with Loriejov Andico on the “RFID-Based Student Information System.” Presented at the 28th PSERE Conference, this project focused on using RFID technology to improve the efficiency of student data management. The system enables faster and more accurate tracking of student information, an essential tool for modernizing educational institutions.

𝗝𝘆𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗲 𝗕. 𝗚𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗼: 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗼𝗧 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴

Jyl Mae B. Gellecano, CpE, is another key member of the SECSA faculty who has demonstrated remarkable expertise in technology-driven solutions. Her project, “Energy Consumption Monitoring and AC Control System Using Internet-of-Things (IoT),” presented at the 28th PSERE Conference, addresses one of today’s most pressing concerns: energy efficiency. By using IoT technology, Gellecano’s project aims to monitor and optimize the energy consumption of air conditioning systems, offering a smart and sustainable solution for managing power usage in both residential and commercial buildings.

The remarkable contributions of SECSA faculty members, from pioneering research in materials science to developing cutting-edge technologies in IoT and neural networks, highlight the school’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of engineering, computer science, and architecture. Dean Nolan E. Fernandez and Program Head David Mark M. Mueller lead by example, with their pioneering works in material science, theoretical physics, and data acquisition technologies.

🎓📚 𝓒𝓮𝓵𝓮𝓫𝓻𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓓𝓻. 𝓑𝓪𝓻𝓫𝓪𝓭𝓲𝓪’𝓼 𝓡𝓮𝓼𝓮𝓪𝓻𝓬𝓱 𝓜𝓲𝓵𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓸𝓷𝓮𝓼!

Dr. John Jay S. Barbadia, a CREED BSAHTM Advisor, recently presented his insightful paper entitled “Impact of Online Work Platforms on Employees’ Engagement and Stakeholder Satisfaction” during the Decent Work & Economic Growth Track at the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) on August 29, 2025. The event was part of the Recoletos Graduate Research Conference (RGRC) 2025, which focused on the theme “People, Ecotechnology, and Innovation: Cornerstone of a Resilient and Sustainable Society.”

This annual conference gathered participants from across the nation and international universities, with over 30 institutions attending the event. The discussion highlighted the role of modern technological innovations in promoting a sustainable and resilient society, and Barbadia's presentation was pivotal in exploring the intersection between employee engagement and online work platforms.

In addition to his presentation, Barbadia, along with Ismael A. Haguisan III, co-authored the paper “ISO 9001:2015 Readiness of a Private College in Southern Negros Occidental, Philippines,” published in the International Journal of Sustainability, Education, and Global Culture (IJSEGC). The research was published on December 17, 2020, and has since been cited in academic circles, reflecting its relevance to the education sector.

This paper examined the preparedness of a private college in Southern Negros Occidental to implement the ISO 9001:2015 quality management system. The study evaluated several key factors, including the context of the organization, leadership, customer focus, policy planning, and communication. Furthermore, the paper investigated the performance evaluation mechanisms and areas for continuous improvement to ensure that the institution could align with ISO standards. The findings emphasized the importance of institutional readiness for the effective implementation of ISO 9001:2015 to achieve higher quality management and better overall performance.

Both of Barbadia's research contributions, his paper on the impact of online work platforms and his co-authored study on ISO 9001:2015 readiness reflects his deep commitment to advancing sustainable practices and institutional quality. By focusing on employee engagement in digital environments and the readiness of educational institutions to meet international standards, Barbadia's work plays a crucial role in shaping practices that can lead to long-term sustainability and success in both the workplace and the educational sector.

In addition to his academic work, Barbadia serves as a respected advisor in the College of Hospitality, Tourism, and Culinary Arts (BSAHTM), where he continues to foster innovative thinking and leadership in the field.

As Barbadia continues his work in the realm of sustainability, innovation, and quality assurance, his contributions are set to have a lasting impact on both academic institutions and the broader landscape of work environments. His research on the interplay between online platforms and employee satisfaction is particularly timely, as many sectors adapt to the rapid digital transformation of modern work culture. Held on October 10, 2025, at the Audio Visual Hall, the Research Summit gathered the entire Southland College faculty and staff for a day of celebration and institutional growth. The event opened with the presentation of the newly appointed members of the Center for Research, Ethics, Evaluation, and Development (CREED), led by Director Imelda M. Patricio, LPT, PhD. Joining her were Dean Nolan E. Fernandez, RME, MEng, Research Advisor for SECSA; John Jay S. Barbadia, DM, Research Advisor for SBA/HTM; Nestor A. Valiao, LPT, MAEd, Research Advisor for SHS and School Statistician; Razel G. Taquiso, LPT, MAEd, Research Advisor for STEd; Isel Sharette M. Reyes, LPT, Editor; and Rochel Van T. Villanoche, Secretary.

Dr. Barbadia presented the CREED 5-Year Research Developmental Plan for Southland College, setting the tone for transformative research disciplines. Complementing this vision, Engr. Nolan E. Fernandez proposed the establishment of a Journal of Education, Business, and Technology, a dedicated platform to publish Southland’s research studies with the aim of achieving international recognition and reach.

The highlight of the summit was the presentation of ten qualitative studies by CREED’s Lead Researchers, each recognized for their contribution with a research incentive of ₱10,000.00. This incentive was generously awarded by Southland College through the leadership of President Dr. Juan Antonio Z. Villaluz and Executive Vice President, Mr. Miguel M. Zayco, Vice President for Administration, Mr. Adrian O. Rival, CPA, and the CREED Director, Dr Imelda M. Patricio in affirmation of the institution’s commitment to research and distinction.
