In his talk, โ๐๐ก๐ โ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ค๐๐ซโ ๐๐จ๐๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ญ ๐๐ฑ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญโ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ก๐จ ๐๐ฑ๐๐๐ญ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ค๐๐ซ?โ, Dr. Tupas challenges one of the most enduring assumptions in English language education by demonstrating that commonly accepted definitions of the โnative speakerโ: based on birthplace, first language, accent, race, or fluency fail to provide a consistent or objective standard.
Instead, he examines how the concept has been socially constructed through history, power, and inequality, and explores its far-reaching implications for language teaching, assessment, employment, and learnersโ confidence. By rethinking this long-held ideal, the presentation advocates for a more inclusive and realistic approach to English educationโone that values intelligibility, effective communication, intercultural competence, and the diverse ways English is used around the world.

Dr. Ruanni Tupas is Associate Professor of Sociolinguistics and Education at the Centre for Applied Linguistics, UCL Institute of Education, University College London. He is also Programme Leader of the Instituteโs MA TESOL In-Service programme. Over nearly three decades, Ruanni has published more than 100 academic papers, and has delivered invited talks and workshops on more than 100 occasions, including keynote and plenary addresses at major international conferences. Most recently, he was a plenary speaker at the International Conference of the American Association for Applied Linguistics.
