‘𝗞𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗹 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝘂 𝗟𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻’: 𝗜𝗠𝗘𝗔𝗦 𝗜𝗻𝗮𝘂𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗤𝘂𝗿’𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Crafting its legacy at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM), the Institute of Middle East and Asian Studies (IMEAS) launched the inaugural "Katuntol Kanu Lalan: Reading Qur’an and Muhadarah Competition 2026" on March 5 at the IMEAS Grounds.

Translated as “Searching the Way,” the Local Student Government (LSG) of IMEAS organized Katuntol Kanu Lalan to initiate a community tradition to be held every Ramadan.

IMEAS Dean, Prof. Sofia Molao, emphasized the significance of these programs for understanding the Qur’an.

"Activities like this inspire love for the Holy Qur’an and encourage participants to learn, understand, and live by its teachings," she stated.

Collaborating with former LSG officers and various contributors, USM students from the Bachelor of Arts in Islamic Studies (BAIS) and the Bachelor of Science in International Relations (BSIR) participated in the competition.

Jhonor Matalam, a third-year BAIS student, and Jamin Malugayak, a second-year BAIS student, secured first place in the Muhadarah Competition and the Qur’an Reading Competition, respectively.

“Gatherings like this not only strengthen our knowledge of Islam but also grant us great reward in the hereafter,” Matalam shared, highlighting the importance of attending Islamic congregations.

Meanwhile, IMEAS-LSG Governor Majaleiah Iedessa Yusoph expressed her fulfillment regarding the event's success.

“Alhamdulillah for the successful IMEAS event—the first grand celebration during Ramadan—I am truly proud as a governor to see IMEAS empowered and recognized,” she said.

Carrying the Maguindanaon theme “Inged a Qur’an, Bagel a Iman, Kapamagisa a Ummah”—which translates to "The Community of the Qur’an, Strength of Faith, and Unity among the Nation”—the program solidified the Islamic foundation of USM students during the sacred month of Ramadan.
