We would like to extend our warmest thanks to the University Laboratory School, especially to its principal, Sir Marlon S. Salvador, for approving our activity and allowing us to borrow the laboratory equipment. Special thanks as well to Maโ€™am Haydee Pingoy for assisting us, and to Maโ€™am Riezl Erin Mantac-Garcia for giving us the time and opportunity to conduct our magic show last Friday. Thank you also to Sir Dabs Leonard Tato for guiding us in preparing the lessons we presented to the students.

This activity was conducted as part of our CWTS NSTP Community Immersion requirement. When we first discussed how to accomplish our task, we agreed: โ€œLetโ€™s teach the children about chemistry.โ€ Although plans were revised along the way, we still pushed throughโ€”and the journey of completing the event was both challenging and rewarding.

Seeing the students fascinated by the topics and experiments brought a deep sense of fulfillment and made all our efforts truly worthwhile. As I end this, I hope the students enjoyed the show and were inspired to pursue science-centered courses in the future.

To the studentsโ€”like atoms seeking new bonds, may you always seek knowledge and discovery. Stay curious, and let your passion for science spark endless possibilities.

The three-day immersion project spearheaded by the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry students successfully fulfilled their final requirement for the NSTP-CWTS course.

On the last day, April 25, various experiments such as the burning money trick, flame tests, and fire bubbles were showcased. Students actively participated, volunteering to try the experiments themselves.

The goal of Kapnayan Para sa Kabataan was to teach students the fundamentals of chemistry and help them build a strong foundation for future learning.

Grade 12 student Karmia Marie Ysulat shared her thoughts on the experience.

"It felt refreshing to review our past lessons, and at the same time, we learned new things that were not previously taught to us, like formulas and tricks that might actually help us survive college life," she said.

For science enthusiasts like Luke Howard Basoy, also a Grade 12 student, the event reignited his passion for chemistry.

"Really nice and intriguing! Who knew chemistry could be so interesting and fun at the same time" Basoy shared.

Meanwhile, Grade 12 student Shahada Jannah C. Kulidtod said the lecture sessions deepened her understanding of chemistry.

"I was amazed at how much meaning there is behind the periodic table โ€” how each arrangement has its own purpose and value," she said.

Beyond the lectures, the ChemShow was the most anticipated part of the event, especially for younger students like Grade 8 participant Fidayeen Malayka C. Kulidtod.

"I really enjoyed the magic show on Friday because of the amazing experiments. Those activities made the show very exciting and memorable," she said.

None of this would have been possible without the support of the people who helped and those who shared their time to make Kapnayan Para sa Kabataan a reality. Erin Lou Bueneventura, one of the event organizers, expressed her appreciation to everyone involved.

The immersion project ended on a high note, filled with new experiences, stronger bonds, and meaningful interactions that will continue to inspire the next generation of learners.

April 24 โ€“ Students from University Laboratory High School โ€“ USM participated in the second day of Kapnayan Para sa Kabataan, a chemistry outreach program designed to spark scientific interest among the youth.

Representing Senior High School were Grade 11โ€“Cuvier and Harvey, and Grade 12โ€“Aquinas and Voltaire. Junior High School was also represented by Grade 7โ€“Ptolemy.

Senior high participants engaged in advanced chemistry topics, while Grade 7 students were introduced to foundational concepts in chemistry. The event offered a day of engaging experiments, interactive discussions, and a deeper appreciation for science.

Students from the University Laboratory High School (ULS), grades eight to ten, took part in the first day of Kapnayan Para sa Kabataan on April 23. The event was spearheaded by first-year Bachelor of Science in Chemistry students as part of their Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS) requirement.

Over the course of an hour, the BS Chemistry students shared their knowledge on the fundamentals of chemistry, aiming to equip budding young scientists with basic concepts that will support their future chemistry studies.

Topics were assigned based on grade level. Grade 8, specifically Section Pascal, explored Lewis structures, atoms, and chemical formulas. Grade 9 sectionsโ€”Fleming, Lavoisier, and Heisenberg delved into quantum theory. Meanwhile, Grade 10 sectionsโ€”Rutherford, Becquerel, and Maxwell focused on gas laws.

Kapnayan Para sa Kabataan will continue until Friday.

Marie Curie, with her brilliant mind, always kept her most trusted companion closeโ€”a notebook where she jotted down ideas, developed theories, and recorded her groundbreaking observations. Today, that very notebook is considered one of the most dangerous in the world, not because itโ€™s cursed, but because itโ€™s still highly radioactive. Even brief contact with it can pose serious health risks.

Due to her long-term exposure to radioactive elements like radium and polonium, Curie and even her personal belongings absorbed high levels of radiation. As a result, her notebooks and other items are now stored in lead-lined boxes to prevent harmful radiation from escaping.

Radiation is energy that travels as waves or tiny particles and can pe*****te matter at the atomic level. While some types are harmless, elements like radium and polonium have too many protons and neutrons in their nuclei, making their atoms unstable. To become more stable, these atoms release excess energy, a process known as radioactive decay which is harmful to every life.

Thatโ€™s where lead comes in. Because Itโ€™s incredibly dense and heavy, it is difficult for radiation to pass through. It also doesnโ€™t easily become radioactive itself, making it ideal for safely containing radioactive materials.

Despite losing her life at 66 from complications related to her research, Marie Curieโ€™s work laid the foundation for groundbreaking advancements in healthcare, space exploration, and renewable energy. Her dedication to science has left a lasting legacy that will continue to impact the world for 1,500 years and beyond.
