Leadership is often seen through achievements, confidence, and perseverance. Yet behind every student leader is a story of challenges, growth, and personal reflection. For USMEC Society President ๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ฃ ๐. ๐ฝ๐๐ช๐ก๐๐ฉ๐ (4 BSE-A1), his journey through the ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ Academy (๐๐๐๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐๐๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐๐) became more than just a training experience, it became a transformative path that strengthened his leadership and earned him the honor of receiving the Gawad Parangal Recognition.
Receiving the recognition was a moment filled with gratitude and fulfillment for Baulite. Reflecting on the achievement, he shared that the award represented something deeper than personal success.
"I felt blessed and happy, realizing that all the hard work pays off," he said.
The ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ Academy provided participants with opportunities to develop their leadership skills through different sessions and activities. Among all the lessons he encountered, one experience left a lasting impact on him as both a leader and an individual, the discussion on Managing Oneโs Mental Health.
Baulite explained that student leaders are often viewed as strong individuals capable of handling responsibilities and pressures with ease. However, he believes that many fail to see the reality behind leadership roles.
"People knew that leaders are very tough and persevere with their crafts, but behind all those facades is a student struggling also," he shared. "With that lesson, I realized a lot of things and it helped me get through future endeavors as a leader."
This realization became a reminder that leadership is not only about guiding others but also about recognizing personal struggles and taking care of one's well-being.
Throughout the two LEAP Academy sessions, Baulite also developed values that now shape his leadership within the USMEC Society. Among these, he emphasized the importance of listening and understanding.
For him, effective leadership begins with trust and empathy. These values allowed him to appreciate both the strengths and imperfections of his officers and members.
"With these two in mind, it helped me trust and love my officers' and members' skills and lapses," he explained.
While leadership development brought meaningful lessons, the experience also challenged him personally. Baulite described himself not only as a leader but also as an introverted person, making communication and openness a difficult task at times.
"Aside from being a tough leader, I am an introverted man," he admitted. "What I did was challenge myself to speak up and share my feelings with other student leaders regardless of being rejected."
By stepping outside of his comfort zone, he discovered that growth often comes from confronting fears rather than avoiding them.
When asked what made his participation worthy of receiving the Gawad Parangal recognition, Baulite emphasized self-validation and purpose rather than titles or accomplishments.
"As a student leader, doing your duty and helping your members grow and foster on their own paths are just some of those things," he shared. "What makes me worthy of the recognition is the mere thought that I am doing well in what I am supposed to do. That is enough to validate it, learning to acknowledge yourself."
As he continues serving the USMEC Society, Baulite leaves a powerful message for aspiring student leaders who hope to create a difference in the university community.
"Enough from being afraid and go for it," he encouraged. "Fear will always be there, and the glory of that fear is that it will just make you stronger along the way."
He also acknowledged the realities of balancing leadership and academics, encouraging future leaders to remain committed despite the challenges.
"To the next USMEC President, trust yourself and put your heart and mind into the next hippocamps."
Baulite's journey in the USM LEAP Academy serves as a reminder that leadership is not measured solely by recognition or accomplishments. True leadership is built through courage, empathy, self-awareness, and the willingness to rise beyond fear. Through his dedication and service, he continues to inspire others that leadership is not about being perfect, it is about choosing to grow and helping others grow along the way.
