𝗜𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗿. 𝗣𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗣. 𝗣𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗮

The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) mourns the passing of Dr. Pablito P. Pamplona, a pioneering researcher of USM, and a cherished member of the USM community.

Dr. Pamplona led important research on durian and other high-value fruit crops like longkong and mangosteen. In the 1990s, he created the “Durian Agribusiness and Expansion Program” funded by PCAARRD and USAID.

Through this program, he set up a durian clonal garden at the research center with Thai, Malaysian, and local varieties. He also introduced better farming methods, including intercropping durian with Lakatan banana during the early growth stage. The banana plants gave partial shade to young durian trees and provided farmers with early income while waiting for the durian to bear fruit.

He also established several regional durian model farms that served as training sites and helped transfer technology directly to farmers. In addition, he led the DA-funded “Household Enhancement Livelihood Program for Muslim Communities” (HELP-MC), which brought durian farming technologies to the former ARMM through model farms. Because of these efforts, durian production areas grew from 8,000 to 17,000 hectares in five years.

He also led the development of USM Var 5, a high-yield corn variety, as program leader of the Corn Research and Outreach Program in Southern Philippines (CROP-SP). For this work, he received the Pantas Award from President Fidel V. Ramos.

Dr. Apple R. Ureta, a faculty member of the College of Human Ecology and Food Sciences (CHEFS), was appointed Director of the USM Alumni Affairs Office effective June 1, 2026.

As director, Dr. Ureta will lead efforts to strengthen alumni relations and engagement. She will also oversee alumni programs and activities, facilitate alumni services, build partnerships, and support the university's development initiatives.

The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) held a soft launching of the Human Resource Information System (HRIS) Project during the Monday Convocation program on June 8, 2026, at the Administration Building, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

HRIS is a project that aims to improve and modernize how USM manages its human resources. It will provide a single, secure, and reliable system for handling employee records, appointments, plantilla positions, leave records, payroll data, performance details, and other important personnel transactions.

In response to the urgent call for relief assistance and humanitarian support from our fellow Mindanaoans in South Cotabato and Sarangani, the University of Southern Mindanao (USM)—through a unified effort of the Extension Services Office (ESO), National Service Training Program (NSTP), and the University Volunteers’ Club (UVC)—is calling for donations and voluntary assistance to support the June 8 earthquake survivors.

A devastating Magnitude 7.8 earthquake has deeply affected our kababayans in South Cotabato and Sarangani Province. As a community anchored in service, USM is stepping up to answer the call of our youth leaders on the ground, leveraging our collective strength to gather critical resources and voluntary assistance.

To align with the specific relief needs requested by our volunteers on the ground, we are humbly appealing for the following donations:

• Clean Drinking Water
• Food Packs (Rice packs, canned goods, instant noodles, etc.)
• Clothing (Clean, usable clothes in good condition)
• Hygiene Kits (Soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sanitary items)
• Sleeping Essentials (Banig, blankets, and pillows)
• Cash Assistance (For hot meals, emergency medical care, and temporary shelter logistics)

To streamline our collection before we turn over our donation to our partner volunteers, please drop off your donations at the Extension Services Office (ESO) Building, USM Main Campus.

We will be accepting donations until Friday, 12 noon.
