𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦: The USM Applied Mathematics Society held the First Annual 𝗠𝗔𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵: 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 last April 28, 2023 at the USM Graduate School Function Hall.

𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝘂𝗲: 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗔𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵'𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗮𝘂𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

First-year Accountancy students, Christian Jay Oliveros (1 BS Accty-A) and John Lloyd Manimog (1 BS Accty-B), won the First Annual MAALAMath: Open Mathematics Challenge held on April 28, 2023 at the GS Function Hall, D.D. Clemente Building, USM Kabacan.

Out of 15 duo participants vying to win the championship, the tandem between Oliveros and Manimog gain the victory, making them the university's First-ever Legendary Math Duo.

Meanwhile, Mark Sabangan (2 BSE-C) and Brandon Kinz Julius Jaungan (3 BS Accty-A) won 1st Runner-up while Miles Angelo Sodejana (1 BSAP-A) and Eric Dominic Manginsay (4 BSECE-A) landed 2nd Runner-Up.

MAALAMath: Open Mathematics Challenge is an annual premier duo math competition organized by the USM-Applied Mathematics Society where students across different degree programs gather together in an intellectual clash of solving problems in Mathematics and its applications.

𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗨𝗣 𝗘𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧

This tricky math problem revolves around the concept of divisors –a mathematical concept in Number theory. A divisor (or factor) is an integer which evenly divides a number 𝘯 without leaving a remainder. For instance, by inspection, we see that 5 is a divisor of 30, and so is 6.

Number theory is more than just manipulating numbers and discovering interesting relationships between them. In fact, Number theory is the backbone behind some modern technologies such as cryptography, device authentication, security systems, websites, and coding.

Most medical tests occasionally produces incorrect results, called false positive and false negative. False positive result happens when a test indicates that a patient has a disease when in fact does not have it, while a false negative result indicates that a patient does not have a disease when in reality the patient does have it.

Mathematics also plays a huge role in the medical field. It bridges the gap by ensuring the accuracy and validity of different measurements in clinical practice such as diagnostic tests.

MAALAMath is one of the first, if not the first-ever, math competition in the country which showcases PURELY real-world applications of math in all of its problems. This is in parallel to its major goal which is to promote and appreciate the essence of Applied Mathematics to the public as an interdisciplinary field of study.

The questions in MAALAMath are NOT DIFFICULT. We like to describe them as ANALYTICAL, CHALLENGING and REAL-WORLD.
