โDepartment of Agricultural Economics โ University of Southern Mindanao
โThe USM Department of Agricultural Economics recently completed a successful extension activity under the LEVEL UP Project, aimed at strengthening livelihood capabilities and expanding economic opportunities for vulnerable communities.
โ
โThe program began with a mini-survey to evaluate the entrepreneurial skills of the beneficiaries, providing essential information to tailor future programs more effectively.
โ
โBeneficiaries then participated in a hands-on training focused on the preparation of salted quail eggs. With quail eggs, salt, containers, and water provided, participants learned the entire process and created their own brine solutions to start their value-added product journey.
โ
โThe JPES officers also helped a lot during the activity. They assisted in organizing the event, guiding the participants, and making sure everything went smoothly.
โAll groups finished the initial preparation stage, paving the way toward producing marketable products. The Department will conduct a follow-up visit after 13 days to monitor progress and offer continued support.
โ
This activity reaffirms the Departmentโs commitment to fostering sustainable livelihood growth and empowering communities to enhance their economic stability and unlock greater potential

Towards a Stronger and More Innovative Department of Agricultural Economics
August 21โ22, 2025 โ The Department of Agricultural Economics (DAEc), headed by its Chairperson, Dr. Helen A. Macalling, conducted a two-day planning workshop in Kidapawan City. The activity aimed to further strengthen the BS Agricultural Economics program, which has been re-accredited as a Level IV AACCUP program, through continuous curriculum enhancement.
During the first day, faculty members reviewed the program outcomes and objectives, assessed alignment with industry and community needs, and developed a comprehensive curriculum map to ensure relevance and responsiveness to emerging challenges in the agricultural sector.
On the second day, the Department crafted its new Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Agenda, aptly called โAgriEconnov8.โ This agenda is built on eight broad themes that promote innovation and integration of solutions to pressing issues in agriculture, the economy, and rural development. The DAEc's RDE Agenda is envisioned to serve as a roadmap in advancing research-based policies and impactful extension programs.
The workshop also paved the way for strengthening external collaborations, as the Department identified potential academic, government, and private sector partners for future engagements in research, training, and policy advocacy.
๐ฑ With its renewed vision, this activity marks another step towards DAECโs vision of becoming a leading hub of agricultural economics education, research, and innovation in Mindanao.
โจ โA strong department is not only measured by its curriculum but also by its commitment to innovate, collaborate, and create impact that lasts beyond the classroom."
